Simple question, used as the snare or clap, not as incidentals or anything.

So what do you find occupying that (70% of the time) third? Dominant snare or a dominant clap sound?. "I use both answers" denied!, And if it it's not actual snares or claps, What do you find yourself leaning towards on the 'sounds like' scale.

Me, Im a snare kinda guy.

ill say clap but the true answer is both.

yeah, both. really, anything with some noise and a middy tone. layering layering layering

a lot of times, i find myself roughly needing a clap for the snap and a snare for the punch

I find a RIM gets the JOB done.

Claps are gay and give that cheesy trance sound. Snares and other impact FX(video games is a good source) all the way.

Wood blocks are nice for more glitchy/garagey type tunes.

But failing that I would lean more towards snares......

What does everyone think of those huge metallic snares that actually make you wince when they hit? Best example I can think of is Disko Rekah by Loefah. I love that tune but fuck me the snare is just a little to "Ringy" and big for my liking.....

listen to some current value dnb or dubstep or some underhill

snares out of the choices but honestly i prefer using woodblocks or something that are short and sharp. i don't use a lot of claps at all tbh which is weird because when i made sampled based hip-hop i used claps quite a lot. i don't think i have that many nice samples in my collection anymore. i need to go find some dirty soul claps.

ps i love current value snares.

Haven't heard that snare on a club sound system. I can imagine it could get tragic. But on my home system, I'm good with that snare. Wouldn't like all snares to sound like that, but I'm good with that one. Wish I had that song as a project file, would fly through 1000's of snare, I'm sure I could find something better.

Thanks for that. For those interested, there are very good claps out there. Some ghetto style claps that r sloppy, maybe with some snapping in there. Love claps.

I'd say snare if I had to, but claps get used in some way in almost every beat I make. Gotta love those CLAPS!

at least no one has mentioned a snare has to be a certain freq range like old pendulum or dnb masterclasses

I personally wouldn't use a snare like that,

but I really like it in this song

those machines are my heart, they started my love for electronica.. i used to compose techno acid and house for days just using those samples (+ some bass). when i first started w/ dubstep they were all i used cuz it's what i had. i don't use 'em much now except maybe a 909 snare and hats. but once in a while i hear a joker tune or something with unabashed 808s, and i usually stick some in my next tune. they're just such classic sounds. that kick is one for the ages, man.
