Hey guys,

Lately i have been having a couple of problems with my computer (Toshiba satellite a300) it has 2gb ram, a 32bit bit windows 7 operating system and an Intel core 2 duo CPU @ 2.00 ghz, for the record.

At the moment im stuck with this computer (i am saving up for a canadian snow season trip at the end of the year...). Lately ive found while using the usb ports with serato and my midi synth that they have been overloading (in serato a red dot flashes and has a USB note next to it...) and also my computer in general has been running slower and sometimes non repsonsive when i have ableton up and running, i think because i have so many different instances running now rather then before.

So my question is would a powered usb help for the mean time and a RAM upgrade to about 4gbs? its getting pretty frustrating and i just want to sort it out int he next couple of weeks because i will be finishing college and have 8 months for production time...

i'd also suggest you goggle piniform ccleaner and defraggler

yeah clean your shit up!

running a 1st gen macbook pro here w/ similar specs; aside from sessions getting unweildly, things never really go haywire. I'm dependent on a belkin USB hub to make it all work tho.

Got a 2nd hub for road gigs for like $29. again, belkin wound up being the way to go.

Ram is always worth upgrading as it's so damn cheap, but 2GB, even in this day and age of 16GB, is still quite alot.

Has anyone noticed any performance gains, using USB flash sticks and windows Readyboost?

I went to the local computer shop this afternoon and they quoted me $170AU for 4gb RAM installed so i was pretty happy with that. Should i rush into the RAM upgrade or should i wait for the powered usb hub?

Its weird how my computer cant handle ableton though, i always defragment my computer and disk cleanup using the windows system tools (or arent they very good?) i was sure 2gb RAM could handle it... and its only recently that i have noticed because i have been running a lot more instances through ableton. Could it possibly be anything else?

Don't pay a computer shop to do it. RAM is LITERALLY. LITERALLY. Snapping a jigsaw into place. And it costs about £20 for 2gb.

and windows cleanup tools are trash compared to some of the freebies like piniform software out there

i wouldnt know where to start with my laptop tho... if it was a desktop i would do it for sure... just had a look at prices converted to AU and it doesnt look like its worth installing it myself and having to wait for it to arrive, its still going to cost me $120 or something for RAM off the net...

Ram upgraded to 4gb computer still lagging in ableton, the midi bar on the top right starts going to 80%. Any ideas?

If you`re battling with too many instances of a specific vst causing cpu issues, find a sound you are happy with and bounce the track down.

Alternately install Windows XP performance edition.
Windows 7 is a memory hog.

If you haven't already bust out some CCleaner and do a Defrag

Ye deadly told me before so i downloaded those tools and did that...

i've been producing on a desktop for 5 years now that has 512 mb RAM....yall are babies

Just for the record, ive been limiting the amount of midi tracks in ableton bouncing them to audio, everything seems to be working fine now and i cant really complain. AND also my audio kontrol 1 is working perfectly i couldnt believe it, must have been either the powered usb hub or the added ram that has provided the fix.
