djing came 1st for me was djing for yrs before i got into production..
when i was a kid i always wanted turntable's and when i got a pair i got into turntablism over the yrs i've entered a few battle's and actually won
but since i got into production my music taste has change alot it went from Hardcore, hardtrance, hiphop and breaks some gigs i've played i even played all these style's in one set.thats just in a dj set tho..
but since i've been producing i've only made dubstep, some DnB and techno.

in the beginning it was all very basic: 10 years old, two Soundlab 1600s and a lot of happy hardcore. i still have a lot of tapes that i made* when i barely had a hair on my baws. yas.
*all shite and i had no idea what i was doing

I started on windows media player, would clickit super fast so multiple copies would open, then use the little play speed sliders and eqs to mix, was fast as a muffucka with my mouse...
Then I eventually wanted cue so I ripped apart my walkman and my little broters wasnt far behind. Them and some modified av cables, and I had cue (sort of...)
Now I run CDJs.
Done.

Started working in my university bar during my first year, got chatting with the DJ, blagged that I could also DJ (never touched a set of decks at that point), and he asked me to cover for him that week. Learnt on the job and took it from there.

Mate had a cd/mixer combo with no pitch control that we used to badly mix uk garage on. Loved this but wanted to progress so brought some tables a decent mixer and some house!!

id been buggering about making tunes before i ever got a pair of decks, some of my mates had decks so i had a few goes on them. mostly i got a pair because i was into dnb and tunes only came out on vinyl back then. so i had to get at least one deck to be able to listen to tunes properly. blagged a pair of completely shitty belt drives of my mates brother and learned to mix on them.

I learned to scratch on my old stereo from the 80s. It had a turntable on top. I would use the phone/tape buttons as a cross fader. I press the phono when I want sound on, press tape when I want it off. Then I bought some belt drives from a pawn shop and a mixer from radio shack. I actually learned to mix by scratching samples in over this old alesis drum machine I had. Got my first pair of 1200s from another pawn shop for 100 dollars. Yes, 100 dollars for the pair, in a coffin. That was 90 or 91.

I used to do mixtapes... but not using decks, using a dual cassette and mastering the pause button to make cassette mashups/remixes/djmixes/etc... back in '87-'93...
Then later I started producing, and various radio stations/podcasts/etc wanted DJ mixes from me... so some of those started floating around, and now I got a show on Sub.FM. But even though I tell promoters I am willing to do DJ sets, they always ask/book me to do a live set.
So I am a DJ only in the radio/online realm... but I'd love to DJ live though (to mix it up versus the live set gigs)

Im from australia, so underground music like dubstep isnt all that common like in the UK and europe and is just starting to get up there in the clubs. I started because no one played the dubstep i liked, id go to a gig and i would here more drum n bass and drum influenced dubstep, nothing midrange. I like that stuff but not when im out, i prefer more intense kind of shit like datsik, skism, mark instinct bar 9 styles. So ive managed to score myself a spot in 2 upcoming dubstep events which im really happy about, i play late in the night aswell so i can bust out anything i like.
Im running 2 cdj800s and a djm909 mixer at home with SL3... I had some friends into mixing and such but not many took it to the next level and all were into mixing house/electro (GARBAGE hahaha).
Producing is the next step for me, ive got all the basics down pat just waiting to finish college in 3 weeks then its go time for 8 months! I think its a pretty good opportunity because there arent too many producers here as its hard to support the lifestyle when there arent too many gigs because people only go out on weekends. Big ups to Sook and Boot! loving their style they are my favourite aussie producers.
Cheers

In 86 when I first heard Licence to Ill the seed was planted. In the early 90's a friend of my roomate had a sl 200 (not 1200) a shit belt drive and a crappy radio shack mixer. That guy taught me how a real dj mixes. Wasent till like 2000 when I could finally afford my own rig.
