RIP.

I loved Slipknot when I was younger, listening to them and thinking I was listening to the real deal. I'm glad I moved on quickly though.

As for metal, they are very much NOT the real deal. Doesn't mean it's bad to like them though.

How are they not the real deal? Or are you just being snobby?

I didnt really like the whole mask's gimmick. But as far as musicianship, especially the drummer (Joey is probably in the top 5 drummers on the planet) and guitarists, they are most certainly the real deal.

still tho its well sad Paul died, i used to be a huge slipknot fan when i was younger, joey jordison however is not in the top 5 drummers on the planet tho, nowhere near (tho he is still very good)

my top 5 metal drummers:
1 bobby jarzombek (spastic ink)
2 blake richardson (between the buried and me)
3 dan foord (sikth)
4 derek roddy (hate eternal)
5 alexandre pelletier (despised icon)

I'd never heard of bobby jarzombek before so I had a quick look on youtube. not my style but amazing drummer, dig the open-handed style.

Best-drummer rankings are always difficult though because the style varies so much across genres. I mean, you can't really compare Mike Portnoy with Jimmy Cobb, can you.

thats why i specified metal drummers, if i was doing drummers across all genres it would take me years and most of my choices would probs b controversial

mainly tho i just wanted to point out that joey jordison doesnt even come close to being in the top 5

yes it is my opinion, but considering i've been playing drums since i was 8 years old and that i used to be in a metal band, i think my opinion on metal drummers holds somewhat more gravitas 8)

I'm honestly not trying to argue or be snobby but I suppose slipknot could be considered metal in the same vein as disturbed, korn, mudvayne, etc but I think that's all hard rock made to sell records. I'm sure that wasn't their intent from the start but that's all they have been for 10 years now. Joey Jordison is a decent drummer overall but well below the metal average. Same goes for the two guitarists. Why do they have a dj and a samples guy? Why have three drummers if the one is SO talented? I guess I can't really comment on the masks because black metal does the same thing and that IS metal...

Imo metal can be anything from Led Zeppelin to Cannibal Corpse but it's always about the music. Don't let the ridiculous band names and song titles fool you, many death metal musicians are among the best musicians in the world and when people compare slipknot to them I can't help but think that those people aren't serious metal fans. I know many metal fans that like slipknot and they'd be the first to tell you that it isn't metal. What would you say if you were talking about dubstep and someone chimed in saying the new rusko album is the real deal? Usually you have to just let that person figure it out on their own.

Sorry about the rant or possibly sounding "elitist." I'm seriously not trying to put anyone down including slipknot. BTW, I love the crowd here, everyone seems like good people.

That Sikth drummer is ridiculously good and Spastic Ink are the most musically ridiculous band I've ever heard (in a good way).
