>MALA - DIGITAL MYSTIKZ
[dmz, deep medi music, soul jazz, london, uk]
Digital Mystikz is a dubstep production duo consisting of Mala and Coki-- when the two started making music together as teenagers they were known as Malibu and Coke--from the South London suburb of Norwood. Along with Loefah and Sgt. Pokes, they operate the DMZ record label and host the influential bimonthly nightclub DMZ, held at the Mass club complex in Brixton, London. Legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, was an early supporter of Digital Mystikz, eventually putting them in his annual 2004 Top 50 list at #29. They are among the scene's most famous producers; their song "Anti War Dub" appeared in the 2006 film "Children of Men," although it wasn't included in the soundtrack. DMZ has been described as one of dubstep's two "most influential regular clubnight" (with its predecessor FWD>> the other one) and "central to the scene." Since starting in March 2005, the club's attendance has increased steadily. DMZ's first anniversary, when a queue of 600 people forced the club to move from its regular 400-capacity space to Mass' main room, has been cited as a pivotal moment in dubstep's history. BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs discovered dubstep at DMZ. As one of dubstep's leading djs Mala was chosen to headline the night portion of the 2008 Sónar Festival in Barcelona and the 2009 Mutek festival in Montreal. The first--and highly anticipated--Digital Mystikz full-length release "Return II Space" is due out May 2010. As the DMZ fliers proclaim, "come meditate on bass weight" at the Chicago debut of a dubstep originator.

>QUADRATIC
[la folia, sleazetone, abstract science]
quadratic crafts dance floor oddities that skirt the boundaries of dubstep, techno and detroit electro. since their first ep release in 2008, the long-simmering collaboration of chris widman and colin harris of abstract science has impressed chicago crowds with dynamic live performances opening for rusko, daedelus, hudson mohawke, kode9, distance, king cannibal and blockhead. widman is best known as a dj and long-time host of the chicago radio program abstract science on wluw 88.7fm. over the years, he has shared the bill with a diverse cast of underground luminaries -- including amon tobin, cinematic orchestra, jaga jazzist, m83, meat beat manifesto, monolake, plaid, the orb, skream, unkle and ulrich schnauss-- played every type of event imaginable, from raves to operas, and is now a smartbar resident dj. colin harris is an agile developer who spent many hours of his youth tweaking lines of code, playing with music trackers (and guitars), and pumping hours of bass-drive out of his computer subwoofer. graduating from a casio sk5 to fruity loops to ableton live, harris has transformed his programming skills to adapt custom devices for live performance. the duo first met in 1998 at widman's club residency in columbia, missouri, where he first encouraged, and eventually, invaded harris' music projects: widman's experience as a dj and drummer complementing harris's sense of melody and technical dexterity. the result is quadratic.

[Fresh-Kid.com / Subfix / Betamorph Recordings / Dented Sessions / Dubstep.fm]
Chicago’s favorite Dub-Slinger, Victor Holloway (aka Phaded) is a front-line veteran of the exploding North American Dubstep Scene. His live sets are peppered with exclusive tracks direct from both artists and labels alike, with a long list of affiliations to established heavyweights: Badman Press, Betamorph Recordings, Savory Audio, Shift Records, and Filthy Digital to name a few. With an aggressive mixing style, top notch track selection and a knack for knowing how to work the crowd, the quest to hone his skills in the mix is never ending. It is this drive that defines him- both as a performer and behind-the-scenes player. With support from a cult-like following worldwide, Phaded will be delivering the music you’ve been waiting all your life to hear.

we regret to inform you, TROLLEY SNATCHA has canceled due to visa issues. the ticket price has been lowered from $15 to $12. BRC has been added to the bill.

MALASNATCHA is apparently too much for homeland security. i witnessed MALA headline--and destroy--at last year's MUTEK nocturne. it's a telling sign of respect for a festival that is known for showcasing live electronic performances.

shiva and prisoner, i apologize, and wish you could come. but with chicago an international flight hub, and the potential for success on a weeknight, it's hard to convince agents to give up weekend dates for certain artists--especially for a short tour. a weekend date in chicago would be a slam dunk, but it's also a slam dunk in a bunch of other markets where the chance for success on a weeknight is low. it's a blessing and a curse.

i too have to work at 9am the next morning :D.
