i respect Erik Satie greatly. he is responsible for a lot of great music both from his own mind and influencing so many different styles and artists. he basically redefined music and taught people to think differently about the way music could be played, written and listened to. read any text on experimental music, noise, ambient, electronic music etc and it will always lead back to Erik Satie.

I love the Gymnopedies. First music I ever played to my son when he was a baby. Well, that and The Congos.

I don't think I've ever heard such a sublime piece of music in my life

It doesn't mix well with Diazepam and Rum; awfully depressing.

Satie & Debussy are arguably the beginning of much "modern" music. They freed it from the tedious restrictions of the classical canon.

And yes, Satie & heavy downers aren't a good mix.

Listening to Satie and having sweaty animal sex with a hot young ballet dancer chick while it's raining outside though... that's the shit memories are made of.

I'd add Ravel to that list as well (not the sex bit) another composer who turned things upside down.

John Field's piano nocturne's are ace as well

I might have trouble sourcing a young ballerina type round these parts. However i have a Laotian illegal immigrant and some damn fine tropical storms. I'll see how it goes.

I love Satie. Pretty pleased to be able to say I can play some of his stuff :D

He has the most eccentric directions on how to play his music imaginable. And some of eccentric titles.

Dessicated Embryos anyone?

Not as nice as his Gnossiennes or Gynopédies in my opinion, but still good.

Add some Thai Stick and a couple cases of Singha and it might achieve an "Apocalypse Now" vibe. I say... DO IT. And share PM me pics.

pretty much the whole of the romantic period was all about breaking away from the classical formulas

you can't help but feel that satie and debussy sat around their apartment rooms on hazy afternoons with a few absinthes in hand, tapping and twinkling away until something stuck.

"Around this time, Debussy met Erik Satie, who proved a kindred spirit in his experimental approach to composition and to naming his pieces. During this period, both musicians were bohemians enjoying the same cafe society and struggling to stay afloat financially."
