I recently got my hands upon a copy of ableton live.. i realise there are some quite cool djing posibilities with it. I was wondering whether you could just hook up a regular computer dj controller tihng or do you have to go out and buy one of the specific ableton branded controllers??
thanks

All midi controllers will work with Ableton. Its just midi mapping them to the way you want can get sort of annoying. Whereas the specific ones are mapped the way most people want them and are pretty much plug in and go.

well you can just make a skeleton dj-set where you map your controller then use that as a basis for every set.

If youve got the cash get yourself a novation launch pad or the akai apc 40 altho if not the korg nanoKontrol is a seriously good cheap piece of kit and more than enough to get you started djing with live...i use 2 with the novation launch pad. The key to the nano is http://thedspproject.com/korg-nanokontrol-review you ll see at the end of the vid the link to this website (nativekontrol.com) where they mod the nanoKontrol for ableton live basically turning it into a beast...its not about your kit its how you use it and that cud nt be more true when it comes to djing wit ableton.

damn good looks on that nativekontrol site, wish it wasn't just for ableton seeing as the way he setup the fader behavior on the nanokontrol is how the drivers should be and some of the other features

I use the novation nocturn / launchpad combo. Although, I find the mixer page on the launchpad too slow and fiddly to use, so might have to invest in a Korg nanoKontrol for the added faders.

I use a KorgNanoKontrol with Ableton and it has more than enough knobs/faders/buttons. Great price too. It's not the sturdiest of controllers but it is pretty small and for the price you can't really go wrong.

couldn't be arsd with the whole video but for like the first 2minutes there doesn't seem to be anything complicated. just launcing clips and fading some of them in, the pots+buttons on the right hand side were controlling a glitch plugin (prob beatrepeat) and eq3 it sounded like.

Had the Akai mpd24 for a few months now, very pleased with it. Durable and very responsive controller.
You should be able to pick one up for maybe 120 quid.
