Bouncing loops in FL lose volume - why?

Basically, I've changed my workflow a bit recently in FL and am generating loops/bouncing out as opposed to doing actual 'tune stuff', to build up my sound library.

What I've noticed is that when I bounce out my four bar loop/white noise sweep etc, that on playback the volume is noticeable less on the bounced sample than it is when I playback the original source in FL.

Anyone else found this, and if so is there something really fucking basic I'm missing? I've read through the FL manual/help file, tried changing the settings of the WAV files that I'm bouncing out etc, but have hit a bit of a wall :?

Is your master fader set lower than 0?

That could cause it.

Do you use any mastering plugins, especially on the master? Do you have fruity's default limiter on the master?

How are you rendering them, with the export dialog?

Nope, checked the master fader, everything on the mixer is at the default levels, nothing up or down

No plugins running on the master channel, no mastering/compression plugins used at all, save for a bit of EQ to bring out some of the elements in the loop and whatever effects I've got on it (reverb et al)

Rendering using the standard export > WAV file menu option

When you say the play back is lower, is that playback with flstudio, like you are bringing the sample back in? Or are you playing the sample in another media player?

Which eq and is it on sine bass?

Which version of fl?

Do you have delay compensation checked in the export dialog?

Normalize

if you don't dp so your sound will not be as bright

both when I playback via WMP/WinAmp, and playback/reimport the sample back into FL
nowaysj wrote:Which eq and is it on sine bass?
Parametric EQ2 on some of the drum parts to remove some frequencies from a couple of my drum elements, though I am finding the same issue on instances (such as white noise generation) where I'm not using any EQ

FL8 XXL Producer

I don't remember that option specifically, so assume it is at whatever the default is.

The sound is fine in FL, when playing back through the pattern/playlist. But when I bounce and reimport the sound it's quieter.

What happens if you export a sound and then drag it into the clips area or open it up to see the waveform?

Maybe already asked but does it happen when you export with all formats? only just noticed this or a new problem?

I dont use fl, ut is anything clipping ie going over digital maximum?

It's when I bring the clips back into FL, listening to them either through the sample browser or importing the wave forms into the playlist editor and playing back through there.

Nope, no clipping or anything untoward happening.

have you dragged the wav file onto the playlist area then played the loop in that? also click on the 'normalize' option as stated previously.
maybe you already know this, but when re-import the wav file then click on the waveform, it generally sounds quieter then it would in the playlist mode.

also another thing ive realised recently is that my sampled kicks etc sound more beefy and louder in the playlist area rather than the pattern area. strange?

This is because the velocity will by default hit at 75% vs. 100%.... if playing the loop by using a step sequencer hit, youll have to compensate for that by pullin velo the whole way up... you dont have this problem with audio clips on playlist though... just when using step sequencer or piano roll.

Velocity.

Check it op.

ah yeh FL always does this. All DAWS do I thought?! it only does it a tiny bit.

what happens if you put an edison on your master, record into that, and then drag that audio into the play list, same problem? Compare the two waveforms, are the peaks reaching to the same relative level?

If they look to have the same amplitude, I'd just think you have some kind of import problem where the volume of the sample or the clip is getting set low.

If edison's waveform isn't the same height of the export, you have problems. This could be your fx causing latency and phasing which is making your render quieter.

So, do I up the Master Fader on the mixer to compensate? Otherwise theoretically, if I kept on resampling indefinitely eventually the volume would drop to nothing?

You forget about it for now and just make it sound good:D

I noticed it a while back and thought it does not really matter. The waveform from what I could see was the same, just a lower db, slightly.

I get this all the time OP, it's because you probably recorded it at full velocity but by default FL plays it back at less than full velocity (75% of original velocity I think, that's what it does to volume anyway)

Personally I never fuck with velocity unless I'm humanising some percussion so in Edison I just turn up the volume to 150%

EDIT: never mind BasicA beat me to it

This never happens with Logic, cubase or Protools.

And with the velocities, it shouldn't make ANY diference. you should hear what you hear, after a bounce it should be exactly what you have been hearing... espesh if it doesn't have any digital clipping and the master fader is set to 0.

FL weirdness

it doesn't make a difference when you just play it back in the audio editor but when you drag it into FL's sampler that's when it sets things like velocity and volume to 75%
