Not a film - it's a rush for a concept that an "unnamed," director is trying to sell to WB for a TV series.

way theyve adapted the characters to avoid da cheese, but kept them the same

Still kinda cheese though, that Johnny Cage bit especially. A washed up actor going undercover... reminds me of Team America haha. Part of the reason Mortal Kombat was so great was the fantasy and multiverse type stuff, Outworld, gods, etc. Modernizing it is a good idea, but it really takes something away IMO. Still, it could be good if it were to become something bigger. I watched this trailer a little while back, I'm glad you guys have given me more of an insight into what it actually is! Whatever it is I'm looking forward to it if it happens!

Bumping this dusty topic for a good cause: the first episode is out
The series is called Mortal Kombat: Legacy and it's going to be a mini web series of 9 episodes , here is the youtube channel to keep up to date
