So its my bday today and i finnaly got some cash i can spend on my production, atm im using just Reason 4.0, My setup is a joak tbh, but im at the point i know i want to upgrade... right now i'm using these to hear what i produce... http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalo ... 8wIwADgA#p

So im wondering what i should get, now the first thing that pops into my head is a decent midi controller, i'll have a search for the best ones so no worries there.

But after that im not sure what to get... Should i buy some software? or Some moniters? Although i think ill get some studio headfones after reading that other thread up atm. Something that pops into mind is Cubase, but im not sure.

So what direction do you think i should go with my cash after i get a midi controller? Im almost 100% i need something for editing sound and vocals etc..Also wouldnt mind a hardware synth just for fun! hmm... but yeah, what do you guys think?

I think with all respect Cubase is a lot of money and complicated at this stage. Have a look at reaper, its very cheap indeed and apparently a good sequencer, not used myself.

I think at least reasonable monitors/headphones would be your first priority as its almost impossible to improve without hearing accurately what you're doing. You also get a nice set of speakers to listen on.

Midi controllers are great, especially if you can play piano etc, but not essential in that everything they do can be programmed. However, if you pick up a novation controller they come with Ableton Lite which is another great sequencer. You can rewire reason into either of them.

Monitors and a midi keyboard.

Spend the rest on having a good day and buy some pints for ya boys.

Now if you still produce next year - think about really investing in hardware.

was something i was thinking about, but i duno if i should, my room is tiny, and its a wierd shape so its most probaly gonna suck acoustic wise so im not sure.

And i mean seariously small, with my bed, chest of draws and dest i litteraly only have space for a chair! have to put my chair on top of my bed just to open my draws

Oh yeah, another thing that comes to mind, something to record random samples and atmospheres when im on road? to a decent enough quility? prefurebly something thats USB compatible? would be perfect. do these exsist?

No worries there, my mates are taking me on a pissup down central London tomorrow! so i got today to do some shopping and then chill with a 8ths and hopefully some new equip

But yeah your right , hardware probaly wouldnt be the best choice atm.

Listen dood, you've got to hear your music somehow. That means usually soundcard + monitors. Maybe in your situation, some headphones. But they are bad for your ears, and don't give you any kind of understanding of what your mix sounds like. Maybe some krk 5 inchers?

Seriously, youll regret not buying nie monitors while you can afford them.

Like noways said, you ahve to hear it...

Lemme come over there stuff cotton in your ears so half the frequencies are fucked, see how funny your mixes turn out.

Aright, you guys have swayed me, im gonna buy some moniters, now im thinking krk 5s or 6s, 5s would seem to suit my room best, but ive heard for dubstep 6s have the best overall freq response for bass compared to high/mids if that makes any sence? so im not sure.

Ive got my eye on a saphire LE soundcard, sound ok?

i've got the krk 6's and also the saffire LE and make beat in a pretty small room. If you got the cash for 6's then i'd go for those. The saffire is a very nice interface, recommended.

Ha, got that one sorted. Just make sure that the saphire has good drivers for your os. Regarding sound cards, I might suggest a pci based interface, if you're on a tower, can't remember, too lazy to scroll. E-Mu makes good cards, especially models with the 'm' in their name, a la 1616m.

The saphire will be your sound card/interface. Does it have good drivers for win 7? Some sound card/interfaces connect via usb, others by firewire, and still others by pci (inside your computer). Generally speaking, the pci connections are the fastest/most stable.

This, be sure to check wether you have a firewire input on your pc. When i got my saffire LE i thought that i had firewire but i didn't and had to buy addional firewire pci card. It wasn't too expensive but tome sime time to find a good one (with TI chipsets are the best), other may be a little buggy i've heard.
