Well, I just got a residency, and it was my birthday a little while, so I'm going to stock up on a bit of gear.

I'm going to get a pair of AKG240s, and an MPD26



rather than the APC40 - since I want some nice sensitive buttons to sample and do drum beats on. I get the feeling that the APC40 is useless for anything but loops.

But, I'm having second thoughts now. I'm thinking that I may try and find a cheap analogue synth. Are there any out there for 150-250 squid, or am I dreaming? Shall I be saving up for a NanoKorg? I don't know anything about synths, to be honest. I'm guessing they're heavier than controllers, since I'm going to have to be carting it around the country.

Any opinions would be well appreciated!

mpd is a great tool to have though.

For the MPD owners, seems to be a retarded question, but what exactly do you use it for? I know about the functionality of midi controllers, but i dont really know what to do with them that i couldn do with a keyboard and the mouse...

jamming out beats on the fly, urm real mpc swings built in. note repeat, urrrm its now a part of my live dj rig in traktor

My PadKontrol has better pads IMO.

I never said I don't know anything about it, I just wanted some opinions.

I'm going to be using it to control serato, sample, do some live shit on ableton, do the drums without having to rely on grooves, and I need the knobs and faders since I only have a keystation with no other controls on it. i.e. it's pretty much exactly what I need.

Plus, the whole Brainfeeder crew use 'em .

Well I've tried both bits of kit and my padkontrol is way more responsive and has a better feel to the pads just my 2 cents

You are very wrong about this. Only semimodern akai that has better pads is the 4000. padKontrol ftw, and cheaper too, and has pretty lights for the golden beach babes you'll be serenading.

Before you get to spending all that money, work that gig for a little while. Some old man advice for you.

you run monome software on a padkontrol though

that's pretty much why i'd go with that

I'm starting to understand you better now. Akai was sold a few years ago. The products they've been putting out since then do not live up to their prior brands reputation. Do your research (just blaze throwing a hissy over his new mpc ), or frivolously spend your money, either way.

Right. My post did sound a bit shallow, I'll admit. I have actually noticed that Akai products have taken a steady decline into plasticcy looking pieces that I would expect off a company like M-Audio. I'm just concerned about a lack of faders.

Anyway, I think I'm going to take your advice and wait on it for a little bit. I'm going to bag the AKGs, get a stand, and use my cdj400s as controllers for now. I'm going to spend the rest of the cash on festival tickets and work for a bit to fill the coffers up again.

The faders and knobs on the akai stuff are pretty good. Faders in particular are nice big and chunky. It's a mixed bag. That's why I have a padkontrol and an mpk
