My theory is that these guys trained theirselves, partly because of talent/gift they got and partly by making a connection between brain and mouth. They learned imo to immediatly speak out what they think about, about the image or whatever they got in their head. They also have develloped a way to make very fast associations. They think of something and immediatly come up with something related to it and so on. They can go forever.
If you see wiley doing it in this vid... fuuuucK!
share & post your theory

95% of those Wiley bars have been used elsewhere.
Don't romanticise freestyling too much - so many use pre-writtens, esp. on radio.

Yeah this is pretty much the case; whether its pre-written for that moment, or just some random thought they had on the bus two years ago.
Still is a major talent though. h8ers gunna h8

When freestyling it's all about rearranging the order you think of sentences. The first line is always a bit of a breather cause it doesn't really have to relate to anything at all and just sort of sets the stage. Then it's all about instant word association. It's always alot easier if your just doing stupid battle raps because all you have to do is something like this
-Chillin kickin it on the 405, (five is the rhyme word, now I have to think of something that rhymes with five that will either brag about my own proficiencies or shit talk the other guy, I'll use alive, why the fuck not?)
got a blunt in my hand feelin so alive.
It's also really important not to get locked in circles. Alot of people can think of 3 lines but can't finish it up with 4, ie
Chillin kickin it on the 405
got a blunt in my hand feelin so alive,
bout to hit the pool gonna have a dive,
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh......
so when first starting it's good to move on after EVERY rhyme. Lil wayne can rhyme a paragraph in a row, but you can't.
Other than that (which was kinda hard to explain... dunno if it helped) it's all about smoking a few bowls, drinking a few beers, and battling your friends when your kickin it. It's all about practice. We used to do that shit all the time and my friend who can't rhyme or rap and has no real sense of rhythm started joining in and he quickly starting dishing out some crazy ass star wars rhymes, if you practice you'll be able to freestyle, trust me.
P.S. I can't stress the chemical factor in starting to freestyle. I usually can't rap too well when sober, most people can't. Marijuana helps expand the mind's horizon (at least for me) when grabbing for words that aren't ridiculously obvious (I remember this battle where muthufuckas rhymed legit and shit like 20 times) and alchohol is especially helpful in the beginning because it helps the MC continue flowing even when they stumble or accidently make a gay joke about themselves (shit happens).
Oh yeah... and most professional rappers who say they are freestyling aren't. If you see a freestyle on TV, 99% of the time it's not a freestyle. Nobody is putting their balls on the chopper like that, especially BS mainstream hip hop. Only a few rappers are really good at freestyling. I know Wu-tang clan used to freestyle with each other all the time and thats how they sharpened their swords. Slug from Atmosphere is a beast and has won a TON of battles, though his written raps are usually much more emotional and his freestyling is just battle raps. Eyedea is another really good MC (the other guy in that vid) who can freestyle like crazy, I would even go as far as to say he's better than Slug in that aspect. Lil Wayne's freestyles used to be good but I think too much sizzurp melted his brain a bit. I can't think of very many other MCs right now that I've seen (or what I assumed) was legitimate.
So get on it nukkas, sip a 40 smoke a blunt and get funkay

oh my g
impressed!
You see, imo it's a direct link between thoughts & rhymes and speaking + rhythm
edit he's even talking about it: his mind keeps going and going rolling and rolling, he sees the images in his head and just speaks them out loud. it's a skill that's for sure
freestyle is like the very last succession of the egoism of the physical world.. actually it's all bullshit and irrelevant lol ;o mad skills tho

oh geeze and lets not even get into ghost writing, alot of hearts will be broken
Oh I almost forgot, fucking Snoop Dogg. He's one of the few mainstream rappers that can definitely freestyle. Even if he raps about the same shit almost every time he's got such velvety flow that he just grooves on it for miles. I've seen a few clips where he freestyles and incorperated a bunch of shit that was going on around him and shit. Fuck and Black thought is the shiiiiit

Not alot of people actually freestyle anymore... Still I equally respect anyone who can go 5/6 minutes none stop without reading anything, jus moving bars around in there head...
