Is there a reason why producers who are also playing out regular are still making tracks at 140bpm and then pitching them up? why are they not making them at 143/145? somehting to do with even numbers or when vinyl was cut?

Don't really know but could be so other DJs have no problem mixing them with the majority of other tracks at 140. Like backwards compatibility.

Not everyone plays at 145, and dance music tends to sound better pitched up than pitched down.

If you're playing out at 145 you're going to have to do some pitch bending anyway, either from the previous track into your track at 145, or from your track at 140 to the next track at 145. Might as well keep your track at the standard tempo and occasionally have it bent up to 145 than to have it at 145 and have it being bent down most of the time it gets played out.

Surely that might lead to a bit of a loss in the sub? EDIT: nm, just realised you were talking about a 5bpm difference which probs won't do too much

Well no1 mixes vinyl at 0 pitch because the pitch is a bit funny around there. I dont see why they have left so many tracks at 140 when no1 plays them at 0 pitch:/

I always mix *and* produce at 140, not sure I fully understand this thread as I don't think i've ever come accross a dubstep tune at 145 :s (in my collection, there are some 'brostep' tunes i'm sure are around there that i've heard) and I don't mix with vinyl either but personally at 145 I think things sound too rushed and you loose the lovely pace dubstep is supposed to have.

this same question could be applied to any dj oriented music.

dnb is made around 170 (or used to be i guess) and plenty pitched it up to 175-180.

same goes with house music made in the upper 120s pitched into the 130s.

it's kind of funny when you think about it.

of all the "dubstep" stuff i've written it's been from 136-144, im guessing most tunes aren't necessarily written @ exactly 140 either. 'den of drumz' by kode9 & badawai is like 146 bpm i think, some of Martyn's tunes are 136...

I am a bit confused by this post. I often mix above or below the zero because I have old techs like you say. If you made the tune faster like say 145 then you would be mixing at 150. Lately I have been mixing at -2 tho. I am getting tired of the rushed beats in dubstep. I want to hear it slow like it is supposed to be and also you leave some room where you can pitch up some house and mix it in too.

Another thought to throw in here is generally bands play their tunes faster live than on their recordings...

Thats because you do not use vinyl. When you use vinyl and you leave the pitch 0 it never stays locked on Technics. No1 ever leaves a record at 0 pitch because it is very hard to work with two records at 0 pitch.

So people who play vinyl will pittch them up a bit. I wonder why they dont just make the tracks faster in the first place?

this could be it. They would like the track a bit faster than 140 but because the pitch is funny at 0 they slow the records down to 140 so they can then pitch them up where the pitch works better.

its a known problem with Technics. Always avoid 0 pitch if you are into long mixes because the pitch is not as sensitive there.

Uh, doesn't the 0-pitch problem on Technics only apply to MkIIs, and only when you're at, like, +/- 0.1% or so and the slider physically sticks into the centre detent? At 140 that's nowhere near +5bpm.

Lets be honest, most dubstep tunes at 140 sound better at like +2 - +4 when mixing anyways I don't see it as a "problem" of technics, more of a saviour ahha.
