"dubstep : a remix joke genre"

ive been listening to dubstep for about 2 years, started off listening to dnb then discovered the step. theres been so much shit thrown at dubstep, and i just wanted to share with the forum what some people have told me they think of dubstep. im doin this purely as a topic for discussion, not to slate anyone and not for being to get into a keyboard siege battle.
so the first thing that i heard from someone that really made me want to hit a wall, this girl i know was talking to me about dnb, and i mentioned dubstep, and she said "dubstep's just hip hop slowed down! if you imagine hip hop slow, it's dubstep!". obviously this is just lack of knowledge of the genre, but its still frustrating that people pretend to know about dubstep when that girl swore she know it, i asked her to name one dubstep artist, and she said "that remix of laroux". this brings me to the main point. i have no strong opinion on this either way, but its just interesting to think about the question, has dubstep become a remix genre? a friend of mine who's a dnb producer in st albans suggested that dubstep is become a commercial genre, and soon there'll be videos on tv channels and shit, but not actual dubstep, stuff like remixes of pop artists, and "tinie tempah" ripping the style. i'm a massive dubstep fan, i started off as a dnb dj and producer, now i have more dub vinyl than i do dnb, and im just wondering how this will turn out. there's so many people out there that claim to know and love dubstep, but really what they love is a remix of "hide and seek" by imogen heap. REAL dubstep isn't a cheesey remix added to an ep/album/bside single just to fill in the slots, real dubstep is as we know it, coki, mala, loefah, skream, cotti, cluekid etc. just wondering what you guys have to say about this.

There is good and bad parts to every genre. Keep to the parts you like and ignore the ones you don't.
I gave up trying to defend the good side of this genre so i just ignore the shit sides now.

The situation annoys me, then I put some deep vibes on and start thinking 'Argghh, everyone should know about this stuff' then I forgot about it and meditate on the bassweight.

lol dont bother taking the opinion of ignorant people seriously. that girl just doesnt know about dubstep, you cant blame her for opinion if its based on "that la roux remix".

i think this remix thing is so popular because there are not many artists that can provide proper vocals on dubstep beats. but the people i know want to hear vocals.. gets boring without!
maybe the producers should try and get more artists to sing tunes/shout samples exclusive for their dubstep records.
i really like how mungos hifi or jahtari do their stuff providing mostly their own vocals, seems some of these other producers are lazy asses

i know what youre sayin man, but i think its kinda sad how the only people i can talk to about dubstep are the producers i know, and my brother who's a dubstep producer aswell. no one else has a clue, but they think they do and argue that tinie tempah is a dubstep rapper. just a depressing situation init ahha

Hip-hop slowed down? I absolutely lolled at the dearth of her knowledge of music.
And if someone said it's a remix joke genre, when they make leaps like that (inference from some remixes to a statement about a whole genre) they had themselves set on a conclusion before the reasoning process even began. Easy enough to prove wrong.

You can say this about any genre though, there is always going to be the "proper fans" and the "scene-sters".
Proper hip hop fans who been into from back in the day of the old school stuff from Grand Master Flash, Run DMC and Jam Master Jay probably say the same thing about scene-sters who think hip hop is 50 Cent or Drake or Lil Wayne with no respect to the older, deeper, non-commerical stuff.
And yes your right, dubstep is going (and going to get) more commerical. But it will only die down again when something new comes along. Personally being a DJ that plays a variety of music, minimal tech and tech house is going to be the new in thing soon.
You only have to look UK Bassline and Uk Funky. Remember about 3/4 years ago Uk Bassline/Garage was massive and Ministry of Sound and all them lot were releasing compaltions left right and center. Same with UK funky, last summer everyone was banging on about "Are you gonna bang doe" and "Migrane Skank" etc, now its no where?
Give it a few years and all the youtube scene-sters who think dubstep consists of a la roux remix and some Lady GaGa remix which is "filthier than licking your nans bucket fanny" will have moved onto something new and left dubstep alone to and left the real fans behind.
Rant over.

Dubstep is not a remix genre
Its just a fad on youtube at the moment to add wobbles to a pop tune.

i just personally think there aren't enough musical minds working in dubstep for it to be sustainable. ultimately, it's nothing more than a dance-floor formular, and one that got capitalised on very quickly, so as to turn it into a pardoy of itself. basically, real dubstep died a good few years ago now, and the guys that made the first wave of tunes that set the template (releases on labels like Tempa, Hotflush etc from 2004-2007) probably don't have the musical or compositional ability to really push it into reaches of quality timeless music. Magnetic Man is as close as it's come, but even so it doesn't feel like it justifies dubstep as *music proper*.
