I downloaded Mixxx and have been playing with it - I mapped the controllers to my midi keyboard for want of a better way to do it, which is not ideal. I love the idea of getting back into DJing and ideally would have a setup incorporating digital and vinyl, but I just don't have the space for my 1200s any more. I think I would be happy enough going all vinyl if I could use one of the controllers with little jog wheels but am unsure which to for.

As far as I can tell the Vestax VCI series have the best build quality but are a bit more money than I would want to spend initially. Are the numark total control series or the hercules controllers serious enough kit to use for 'proper' DJing? Are there others to look at?

I have searched the forum but haven't really found a pertinent discussion on this. Apologies if I'm being blind!

I'd strongly recommend the M-Audio Xponent, its got some really nice features and is big and flashy enough to give you back some of the "presence" you lose as a digital DJ compared to using CDJs or turntables. What are you wanting to do though? Go completely digital, use integrated software such as traktor scratch with your turntables, or run your turntables through DJ software as a sort of effects unit, using a midi controller to control those effects? (Either way like I said, still reckon the xponent is worth looking into)

Thanks for the reply. To clarify my needs; currently, I want an entirely digital setup with only my laptop, audio interface and a controller. Later on I would like to get something like Serato and integrate it with the decks I already have but while I am pressed for space I can't have my decks / mixer set up at all.

The only other thing worth mentioning is I have a CDJ200 gathering dust - I suppose I could set that up with a timecode CD as a controller, which may work nicely

First of all, there is a thread here with pictures and links (i think) to a grip of dj midi controllers. Sure it's searchable.

Second, check out NI's new traktor controller. Looks to be the bomb diggity. It looks like it will also be quite expensive. It is basically a torq xponent/xone4d type deal. Looks like it will sit between the xponent and xone4d in terms of quality (and price).

Its a Hercules RMX. I use it as a digital mixer for VDJ and connect to KAM DDX880's via timecodes to it. I've also connected 2 CDJ 1000's to it as well and has worked fine.

Will sell up for about £200-£220 if you want it, comes with everything and its £100 cheaper than a brand new one.

And it comes with a basic form of VDJ software, which you can upgrade to the pro version for about $49 via the website, which allows you to connect timecode vinyls/CDJ's to it

I'd highly suggest checking out the reloop controllers. touch sensitive platters and the pitch feels just like a 1200 with the accuracy of a cdj1000

don't buy a numark total control. i wanted to buy one and they told me the omnicontrol was better, guess what? the omnicontrol sucks. the jogwheels start spinning the second you look at 'em, some buttons don't work or light up and the faders feel kinda cheap. oh, and i hate how you can't record the mic input into traktor.

can someone point me in the direction of a usb controller that:

has a built in sound card + headphone jack
is under £200 (ideally under £150)


it doesn't have to be very good whatsoever just as long as i can do basic mixing on and it wont break in 5 mins flat. i've been looking around but i can't make up my mind.

Read above, Im selling my controller/soundcard on ebay. its at £155 at the moment, the reserve is at £200.
