Well, im working on a mix at the moment, and ive finally got the tracklisting and all the mixes sorted(ish). Anyhoo, i just went through it to see how long it is, and it is almost exactly an hour. I then counted the number of tracks, and theres 25 of em. 0.0

Does this not seem excessive? (i.e. should i be letting the tracks play out longer? Personally i get keen and try to get em in as soon as possible, but i dont know if im just being a retard. With the emphasis on the "t" of "tard")

It's really all about your personal style. If you can pull off 25 tunes and it flows through that hour, then right the fuck on

If the mixes are choppy and sloppy, take a few tunes out and focus more on the mixing and structuring of the mixes.


Again tho, it really is all in the eye of the beholder. I personally dig mixes that keep things going with a lot of tunes and building the set to control the listener's experience. One of the best dj's I've ever heard was Jimmy Van M opening for Digweed. He took it from some loungy ambiet'ish type stuff, and built the set to a fever pitch with track selection and excellent mixing, only to drop it almost all the way back down and rebuild it again.

Just do your own thing dude. If it sounds good, then people will take notice

As a person who couldn't mix to save his life, I can only respond as a listener. Sometimes a dj will try and cram as many track into an hour as possible. Sometimes that sounds good, depending on the dj. Sometimes, it sounds rushed, and the tracks don't fully develope. There's quite a few tracks that have my favorite part at the second drop.

25 tracks in an hour doesn't seem excessive to me, but if you notice yourself being too keen, maybe make an effort to break your habit, and let a tune stretch out. Keeping things varied has been the most common thread amongst my favorite sets.
