I've thought about this.

How can people who apply themselves to one religion not consider themselves atheist in the eyes of others. They are most definitely outnumbered regardless of stance.

Just don't give a shit, we're all going to die at somepoint, you'll find out (or not) then.

I have brief moments of clarity where I realize that trying to understand the origin and meaning of existence of life is futile within the span of an average humans lifetime. Then I go back to being a cocky self hating atheist.


I wish I could just genuinely not care like my religious stance implies I do.

I know. And it's fucking ridiculous. It's because they never truly question their beliefs. If they did, they wouldn't believe what they do. They're just indoctrinated from birth to believe.

One point I bring up a lot in discussions with people is that they only believe what they believe because they were indoctrinated from birth to believe it, more specifically, the point that if they had been born instead, in Saudi Arabia, for example, they'd be Muslim right now. Their faith has nothing to do with what they truly believe, it's just a product of coincidence.

I don't understand indoctrination though. I grew up in a Christian family, in a Christian primary school. We were forced to sing hymns every morning. Our religious education classes consisted of simplified bible stories.


Yet I don't remember ever believing in God. It just never made sense to me logically. Just like I never really believed in Santa.

I hate to sound so haughty and arrogant, but that's how it is. some people question, others follow

I'm lucky to have had parents who weren't really religious. they were both raised christian, and I guess they went through life calling themselves that, but I always doubted the real level of their faith, and how much they cared about it. they gave me the opportunity to choose for myself, and through my own process, I decided upon what I believe today (nothing). I guess you could say that I haven't truly believed in God since I was in elementary school, which is when I first questioned the notion, but I never called myself an "atheist" or anything like that, mostly due to the fact that I was 5 years old and didn't know of such a thing.

When I was around 12-13 years old I really became active on the internet, and through that I learned more about religion, ie, why it's bullshit. I mean, it never really made sense to me, but that's when I really learned about it, eg, the fact that Jesus is just a knockoff of 1000000 other deities, and that Christianity (and pretty much most others) are just Paganism. At that point my parents ("officially") shared in my belief (or rather, lack thereof) through exposure to much of the same information as I was exposed to.

the funny thing is that I believed in Santa for a longer period of time than I believed in God

I remember I used to be in the boy scouts. One day when I was about 8 or 9 I was filling in some information form. The woman asked me what my religion was and I said I had none (I didn't attend church, I didn't believe in God, to my understanding this was true) so she said "So your a Christian. I'll put Christian." As if Christianity was they official religion of apathy.

So many people show up in the UK census as Christian. How many of them actually attend Church, have read the Bible, or ever even tried to make sense of their beliefs? If you genuinely believed in god and the truth of the bilble you'd follow it to the fucking word, you wouldn't risk your eternal existence. People need to just admit that they don't really believe and we can all get on and make some progress.

Not that I'm a believer, but how is denying the existence of any higher power going to create progress?

I hate self-proclaimed atheists as much as I hate religious nuts. Both groups are never willing to make any compromises and just create friction. People can believe in a legit flying spaghetti monster as long as they dont try to force that shit on me. Practicing some form of spiritualism is human nature. It helps us understand our place in the universe. Just make sure that your personal brand of spiritualism doesn't negatively impact my life.

well to be honest, religion is detrimental towards the advancement of society. if you think that the world is going to end in your lifetime (which a very large portion of Americans believe), you aren't going to be a productive member of society.
