How well known is dubstep in your area?

I thought that as Coki and Bar9 are performing in my small-ish hometown on Sunday, a town of which hasn't ever seen the likes of established dubstep artists in its vicinity let alone an actual event dedicated to the sound, I was just wondering how popular or far spread the sound of dubstep actually is in your area, town, village, district, borough etc.

It's not surprising that people between the ages 12-17 all pretty much know what it is (or so they think) thanks mainly to YouTube and the Ministry of Sound cd. Though it's quite funny to see really obscure villages or towns hosting big nights like mine when barely anyone knows the sound let alone the artists. I can't really see the event organisers welcoming Coki and Bar9 to my hometown making very much profit especially for £8 on the door.

How is it for everyone else?

I live in phoenix, Arizona and it is fairly popular around here, obviously with the same crowd thats doin DnB and hip hop, but i hear more and more people saying they're "over it" and its "dead" but i think they're crazy. i found out about it a little late (like within the last year) but i can't help it, i'm addicted. i spend hours on FL tryin to tweak Sytrus to get the right sound or make new variations of the wobble and messing with automations, i love it. People that knock it now are just elitist hipsters that want to act like they don't like stuff as soon as it gets popular. Long live Dubstep!

Leeds is known for 4X4 I think and in Gipton where I used to live acouple of years ago thats completely the case but in Chapeltown Dubstep is actually it.

After chart shit, I'd say its the biggest style around my area- at school we get mala and jack sparrow played regular over the place. Of course you got your wobble merchants but tbh their normally the middle class kids who've only been into the scen a year or so

My senior year of high school, me and my friend, who was a junior at the time, were the only people in our entire school that listened to dubstep. He has since started listening to the harder stuff, like flux pavillion, borgore, 16 bit etc... (aka music I think is shit).

However during his senior year he managed to get just about his entire class listening to what they called "techno" (which was really just tearout/jumpup dubstep and dnb). I always hear kids asking for him to burn CDs with that "techno you listen to" on it

I pretty much only listen to more "wonky" dubstep now, and I'm the only one I know personally that listens to it. In Pittsburgh at least, whenever someone I would like to see comes around (Scuba and RSD recently) it's always 21+ :( Whenever Borgore or Datsik come around however, it's 18+. Me being 19, it's a real drag...

my area specifically (central NJ, USA) its beat there are no shows or anything even closely resembling dubstep or drum n bass, ive got a big crowd of my friends into the sound. the majority of people around here are all about house/electro but that crowd is usually all dickhead guidos so i try and stay away from the clubs around here. the only thing keeping me alive is there are monthly dubstep/dnb nights up in NYC. wish i could have some producers or some people to chat up dubstep production or production in general and the whole scene in my area but nothing at all. the only other producer i know of from my state is the widdler and i doubt hes gonna wanna hangout anytime soon haha. i think its getting to be more widespread and i hope NJ could get some big things going soon

There's a fairly small scene in Baltimore/DC and it consists almost entirely of filth (with the exception of Joe Nice).

It's pretty big in Bristol, but I moved a few miles out of town last year and it's more Wurzels than Joker where I live now. Should I have stayed in Easton?

I'm really the only one in my group of friends that listens to it, and i've been spreading the good word to a few of em. I've met 1 dude that knows of it, but just the well known rusko, youtube hits, etc. This one ghetto dude I met was bumping some diesel-sounding shit, and seemed to know a bit about it. I'm known for sneaking in a dubstep rager at my parties when the energy is just right, and everyone just goes crazy haha

Really no scene at all, music in my town is shit. You're either all about the local screamo scene or you bump lil wayne/gucci mayne/kesha all day. so fuckin lame

Pretty lights and the like have gotten a bit more popular around here though

In Liverpool it's still growing, but it is getting bigger and bigger with events like Chibuku almost every 2 weeks with big name djs playing out dubstep. Clubs like Magnet also have dubstep nights and a few smallers bars (Cava & Djangos Riff) also play Dubstep/jungle/DnB.

i think me and this other guy in my town Larnaca, Cyprus were the first to listen to dubstep and now ever since it's growing amongst friends and such and last week i got invited to a cyprus dubstep appreciation group which has about 70 members... so who knows, maybe we'll be hosting dubstep events :)
