This is my first post here, and I wish it could be helpful or insightful... but instead I'm looking for some help.

I recently got into synth, and I've figured out how to use the oscillators to make the characteristic dubstep bass, but I've run into a bit of a challenge. This track by Foreign Beggars has a bass sound that I really like, but can not for the life of me figure out. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The bass I'm trying to figure out comes in around 1:35 with the drums.

Chasing shadows use a lot of modulated reeces. (google reece bass) and other techniques. That should point you a step in the right direction.

Ah chasing shadows. They have a particular bassline they use in all their tracks, all just slightly different. One of the best UK acts around at the moment

I think Depone is right (with the little experience I have) - Reese Bass with a low-pass filter, then some distortion. Fatten to heart's content

I knew I'd get a reply like this, and that's fine. I think it's a nice place to start, because I liked that sound.

A lot of great artists have tried to emulate a sound they've liked, and in the end sounded completely different. It's just a part of the learning process.

Ignore those comments, they're ridiculous. It's good to understand how sounds are made so that you can utilise those methods when you feel it's appropriate. Also when you discover those things, it opens up more windows. These haters seem to forget that rather easily

Id much rather see people trying to emulate sounds like these than f'ing endless yoy's.

Reece + Overdrive + Lowpass + Fuzz istortion on the atlantis filter unit.

Sounds bout as close as I care to keep trying to get it.

Willing to bet this is alot less complicated when they do it, I always take the hard route.

Basically start witha reece and then sculpt what you want with effects. Dont go overboard with the detuning.

This is a very, very important piece of advice from Basic A. Too much detuning and even a small change in cutoff/resonance makes a huge difference to the sound.

I see that. At first when I started to detune it, I was detuning it by half-step rather than cents. It sounded pretty funny hearing an Eb1, D3 and Eb5 playing at the same time. That's also when I realized I was doing something very wrong.

-run detuned saws through a huge ass effects chain...
-record it
-pass the recorded material through the effects and record that
-do this 2-5 times with any effects, and youll get something you looking for

once you get a handle on that, do the same thing but with effects only affecting certain frequency bands.

spend 10 hours rendering files again and again...then watch the youtube filthier-than comments roll in

makeing this much harder than it is -.- it's basically what i said. I've created it already... Sorry if i came off as a hater , just some people have intentions that are diff than others (like that one guy that samples datsik/excision/downlink/vaski/etc lmfao). And yes... i did create it to understand synthesis better aswell, i know where you're comeing from
