hey,

Ableton's my main daw and i'm at a level now where i want to build my own kits/textures from scratch from found sounds like recording stuff from the world outside the 'puter to mess with. Just wondering the people who are doing this what kind of setup you have recording wise? I was thinking bout going down the field recorder route and wondering what experience people have with different recorders etc.

I got a zoom h2 and its great because of its portability, it runs of batteries. I just throw it in a rucksack with a few sd cards and pack of £1 batteries whenever I hear something I just pull it out and record. You can also get windjammers for them for recording outside recording on windy days.

I use a Yamaha Pocketrak 2G. It's tiny in size and runs off two AAA batteries. Has a built in USB socket and the quality is great. There are some newer models out now from Yamaha but these portable field recorders (most brands - Zoom, M-Audio, Edirol etc) are great for what you are after. Just see what your budget is and what features are most important. I recommend getting one that takes standard batteries and not a special rechargeable battery.
