When i load samples into drum rack they seem to sound a lot weaker, is this mainly just down to the volume being default at -12dB?
Whats a suitable volume to change this too? thanks

Check the release on the ASDR. Turn it up all the way to start with so the full sample plays. Later you can adjust it back down if you want to.

It could also be the velocity sensitivity. I noticed that if i turn that up the samples get louder.

Try it by putting the velocity up in the simpler of one of the samples and then right clicking and selecting 'copy to siblings'

Every time I load a hit into drum rack I change the volume to 0db and set the velocity to 50. That will give you something to work with. I have no idea why the volume always sets to -12db automatically but it's not what you want.

Speak for yourself. I do not want every sound hitting at 0db because the rack will be in the red on the mixer. You can set your own defaults but I would leave that one there tbh.

FUCK the drum rack
Drag your audio samples into their own channels in arrangement view... besides adding a bunch of one shots to your arrangement it simplifies things.

I normally just throw a saturator on the whole rack. Definitley boost the velocity though so you can adjust each hit in the loop separately .

^this^ try setting one sample to about 70-75% velocity, then right click...copy to siblings. Velocity is set to zero by default.

Mate you just saved about 3 months of my life.

No prob glad to help

and like gh02 said you could set the velocity how you like it, then remove the samples and save it.

Yeah as a preset, but have some time here at work so researched a bit:

found this thread: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=80481

excerpt:
saving defaults for Simpler is for solo instances of Simpler only, not for simplers inside drum racks..

goto: Library/Defaults/Dropping Samples/On Drum Rack
drag the default setting for Simpler in that 'On Drum Rack' folder..

when you now drag a sample on a drum rack pad it uses your custom Simpler settings..
Can not try it right now but might work

all day long is exactly how much time you spend copy pasting drum hits every time you tweak something if you dont use drum racks

I don't like Drum Racks.

I load all single hits into separate SImpler tracks then MIDI program stuff. Works for me.

The suitable volume to change it to is completely dependent on your mixdown. But leave yourself plenty of headroom and build your drums around your kick/snare.

Drum Racks are all single hits loaded into separate Simpler tracks with tons of macro control possibilities. Drum Racks are brilliant if you know how to use them.
