the ikea expedit dj desk thread

made this thread from splitting up an old one so if some of the posts don't make sense that's why

lots of people seem to have issues about both vinyl storage and getting a DJ desk at the right so you don't get back pain here so here's my solution - storage space for about 1000 records, raised section to put decks on, with space for an amp or whatever you like underneath, laptop stand and all for under £130 made out of various bits you can find easily at ikea. most specifically made DJ desks you could buy are hundreds of pounds and imho don't look as good and obviously don't have the vinyl storage built in either

quality's pretty crap but you should be able to see well enough

it uses this http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10103088

Image

with the top piece from this on top http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20105341
Image
or you could use two of these http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10071172 but that doesn't actually work out any cheaper and wouldn't be as stable if you had to move it. depending on how tall you are you might be better off just using the two pieces from that table placed on top of each other on top of the expedit unit without the feet. it raises it up quite nicely and that's what i did for ages until i'd fully decided on what i wanted to do with the rest of it. it does end up quite tall with the feet on which is ideal for me because i'm pretty tall but for shorter people it may be better without - and lots easier as well

then the legs that raise the table top bit up are these. there's different sizes so you can work out what's the best height for you, but i've used the 11cm ones and i'm 6'2" and they're just right for me http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=capita

Image

one thing to note when putting the legs on is that there is a raised bit on the end of the expedit where the two pieces of wood meet, so make sure the feet don't straddle that as it'll make it unstable. i made that mistake after measuring it all to get them in the right places and then having them plonked right on top of the raised bit :x also, put a little bit of bluetack on the bottom of the plastic to prevent any chance of movement

for the laptop stand it's the angled legs on the far right in the link above
Image
with this on top http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10011017

everyone else feel free to post your solutions!

bit of clarification copied from later in the thread:
badger wrote:
Capture pt wrote:how far into the main deck do you have to mount the angled legs so that the laptop stand fits flush against the wall with it all?

just measured mine and there's just over 8cm from the back of the base of the metal angled thing to the back of the wooden surface. the laptop stand sticks out about 10cm further than the back of the surface, and that's sticking out 5cm from the back of the expedit. if you want it all flush it'd look shit and have far too big an overhang at the front

if you really wanted it level you could move the metal bits about 7cm, maybe 8 at a push, forward and still be able to fit technics decks on, but they'd be right up to the metal leg and it doesn't look as good imo as it's more cluttered. depending on your mixer too you'd have issues with the shelf overhanging and making it awkward to use

Image

can see in that the board i put on the back to stop records falling out the back - would recommend doing the same even if the unit isn\t in the middle of the room like mine because there's still likely to be a gap between it and the wall

I like the shelves.

The blue LED colour belongs more on a car parked with a load of others on an industrial estate where everyone's listening to hardcore and talking bout their new spoiler though.

they're a lot more purple in real life but yeah i know what you mean. i like them though so that's all that matters, even if it makes me a chav :P they actually are lights for putting under cars as well - it was a right pain getting them connected up properly with the voltage difference between car batteries and mains and all that jazz

Fair enough. It's a nice set up anyway.

Off topic. Why do people put those cunting stupid lights under their cars like that?

That homemade desk thing is sweet Badger, Those metal things though, are they just screwed into the desk top and then sitting on the top of the shelving? I'm guessing it's sterdy?

yeah basically. the ones holding up the desk top (actually the top piece of a coffee table) are these
Image
and they're screwed into the bottom of that, but they just sit on top of the expedit shelving. i put some small bits of blue tack on the bottom of them to stop slippage and when i moved house the other week it was surprising how hard it was stuck down when i tried to lift it off. had to get a knife to try and separate the legs from the shelving it was that well secured! if someone leant really hard on it or fell into it or something then it might topple but you'd have to be a complete retard/extremely drunk to do that

they're pretty good for mixing on and fairly inexpensive. sounding much nicer now i've got them properly isolated on stands, even if the stands were half the price of the actual monitors lol

they've got a reasonably flat response but they're a bit heavy on bass so wouldn't want to use them for producing on ideally. that'd mean me actually getting off my arse and starting production though which seems to be one of those things i always talk about and never actually do

I really don't like them

I mean they're not bad just as speakers.

but using them for producing, they are horrible.

sound, i got them a few weeks ago but havent really been able to use them since the girl below me is a bitch and if we get another noise complaint we get evicted and our deposits taken... moving next month though. you know you can plug those ports if the bass is too strong?
