I've been looking around for so called "easy to use" distortion plugins to improve the grittiness of my songs, no luck,
I might be tweaking the wrong knobs.
Prime example, not dubstep actually but its what I'm looking for.

Well ill answer, but youre not going to like it.

The answer is there is no simple solution. Its a complicated realtionship between what youre starting with, what tools youve got, the acoustic environment, your desired outcome, and youre skill in manipulating what youve got into what you want.

Theres no simple fix for anything.

The only answer is to learn what youve got backwards and only get new stuff when you know it will help in a certain way.

Sorry, I know that not the answer you wanted.

Having said that, Audiodamage has some freebies, Fuzzplus and roughrider which might be a good start, also look into the bootsy stuff.

:)

Camelcrusher is a free plugin from Camel Audio (i think it's called camel crusher, based on the camel phat premium plug) that I use often, it's got a limited amount of knobs but it's nice for some quick fatenning up. CamelPhat is probably a whole lot better, but if you try camel crusher and see what you think you could think about buying the real deal then.

i can't think of a recent mixdown of mine that didn't include camelcrusher. thing is fantastic on snares, leads, even vox. the compressor circuit alone is pure vibes.

I know the sound your after (I think!) Trent Reznor is a massive fan of Metasonix hardware FX units and uses them alot in NIN:
http://www.metasonix.com/
They are extreme valve distortion units which generally use odd valves not designed to be used with audio (unlike the very common 12AX7 found in just about every valve based unit) My mate got their "scrotum smasher" unit and it was amazing to destroy audio with that beast. I've never really come across any plugin that sounds like these units but as someone else stated Izotope Trash is great. Try using the pentode and triode tube/valve distortions on Trash and any others that offer extreme break up characteristics based from valves (think it tells you somewhere when your selecting the types) there are a few good ones on there.
