Give your snares more life! Its amazing what putting a snare on a bit off the beat can do for your tune. This really works with well layering.

Example: Soundcloud

Remember to never be scared to take off quantise to give your drums more character.

P.S don't watch the weird soundcloud - thats my alias for everything non-140bpm.

Nice one

Putting your hats a bit off the beat does a hell of a lot to add groove as well

Bad examples.

Polyrhythms dont get polyrhythms?

And I think youd be very surprised just how much of flylos stuff is perfectly on beat. He makes you shuffle it yourself in your head by displacing a few major elements. The whole working from tape ting doesnt help though, wow and flutter.

Im just saying, yes it sounds beautiful, but at the cost of being impossible to mix. Tradeoff.

And sam+lo=easy as to mix man.

this. about styaing on the grid, stupidest advice i read ever. get off the grid would be mine...i dont make no robostep, sorry.
to get really funky, skippy, groovy and swingy (no, quantize swing through all you r tracks aint no real swing) you needs to get ooooff the grid,
and dubstep is about swing if ya didnt recognize yet.

sorry :w:

my tip: put a autofilter on drums to make em wet.

off beat is good, but then i quite like hard quantised mechanical rhythms too like most production advice it's about knowing when is the right situation for which technique.

These days I rarely quantise my hats. I drum them in on my mpd and then make manual adjustments until it sounds good to me.

I agree, I like hard quantised rhythms for dubstep, stuff that a real drummer can't do very well (I'm a drummer) I like it sounding electronic. I think human timing is good for hip hop vibes as hardware samplers introduced this into the production. I try making stuff a bit out but it generally seems to contrived, however we all like a little garage type swing. Can't even listen to Fly lo anymore as I just see his stuff as being way over the top and annoying. Do think he is overrated.

I just wanted to know how it's done in the OP. I want my snares to hit better.

Best advice ever! Practicing mpc style drumming has changed the way i produce and the way i perform. Its a great skill to learn.

Having your different layers of snares hit slightly off can yield surprisingly interesting results too.

Lol.

My typing is terrible. I go from this netbook to normal size keyboards to wierd split-center ergonomic deals at various times throughout the day, never adjust to any of them properly :?

i hope that explains why I seem less the coherent on here sometimes... Im not a TOTAL alchie.
