Irreversible

Finally watched this last night, after years of hearing about it. I don't know how this got so much praise. The violence was pretty raw and some of the camera work and techniques were interesting, but overall, it fell short.
Props to Noe for using some interesting techniques (Infrasound, strobing, some good camerawork) but the dialogue was utter shite and I found myself feeling extremely bored for the majority of the film.
There were certainly some aesthetically impressive settings (The Underpass and 'The Rectum') but that's not enough to save it, imo.
Apparently, all the dialogue was improvised because Noe only had a 3 page draft for the film. That explains a lot.
I got the impression he had no idea what he was doing for the majority of the film. 5 minute scenes of waving a camera around in a dark alley or club isn't very impressive or engaging.
I'll watch it again, sometime.

Massively overrated IMO. It was alright, not really something I'd want to watch again.

I thought it was good! Would not watch again though. Not because I didn't think it was good, just because I don't want to see it again.

Well as far as the whole rape/revenge theme goes it wasn't bad, it was certainly better than say.......I Spit On Your Grave but on the other hand it was no Straw Dogs.

Thought it was wicked. I particularly like the end (or beginning lol!) of the film with all the noise and the milky way and Beethoven.

I think this is part of the reason really. Built it up too much from hearing about it so much. That's why I try to avoid reading or hearing about films before seeing them. Too many people talked to me about Inception so I waited a couple of months to see it so I could forget the stuff they said.

Nobody built it up when they told me about it. They just talked about the fire extinguisher scene and the rape scene. I saw the odd review saying it was great etc but I never pay much attention to reviews.
Knowing what happened in it and seeing the odd scene took away a lot of the shock value, but I don't think a film should be disappointing once you take away it's shock value.

Srpski film was odd. Technically, it was very well made but it was just a lot of sexual violence. Not much else to say about it really. Didn't do anything for me.

The filmmakers said it was basically a response to the extreme censorship in Serbia. They wanted to make the most unspeakable movie in protest of it. I think it did the job, if they were being serious with that statement and not just bullshitting. I believe they're on the level though.

yeh apparantly its a commentary on the Serbian govts treatment of the people, basically summed up by them fucking them over again and again and again and again... still... odd film

I don't want to get on here and start arguing the first chance I get, but maybe some of you should watch Irreversible again.
Ofcourse there's the element of the director wanting to shock etc., but the way that after the two incidents (violence in the club and the rape), the movie, instead of having the audience focus on retaliation/ revenge , instead gives evidence to why these two men with their individual infatution with this lovely woman, could actually react the way that they do in the first scene.
That link i posted before is Noes new film, a ayahuasca deathtrip ravehorror set in tokyo, can't wait!
