Real time recording of midi drums with keyboard

I'm finding playing drums in with a midi keyboard a bitch. Maybe it's just me. I don't get much latency so that's all good but physically as an 'instrument' it's just fucking weird. It's like there's not enough space to get into it. I'm used to hand drums and have played drumset a bit. I'm borrowing some v-drums but just interested in knowing what kind of thing you do for drums. Are pads really that much better the finger drumming thing is limiting imo. I like the look of the handsonics tbh. Thoughts on this would be welcome guys

I find playing drums in on a keyboard almost as easy as playing a kit. But tbh these days i usually just draw most things in as i tend to make much more intricate drum parts. and actually i find finger pads even harder to use than a keyboard.

I usually just do a rough take of whats in my head. Then its all drawing it in and filling in the spaces.

im an mpc 3000 og...

still think u can come up with crazy results using a keyboard... u basically need 2 things

- proper understanding of envelopes so ur percussive section is as u want it to be
- enough practice to bang at hand...

i remember being afraid to bang the heck out of my midi keyboard... now i stand up and hunch over it .. and just rock it till i sweat on the record function.. keep the best bits..

still prefer stepsequencers or my mpcs repeat function tho (i miss it :'( )

never draw midi.

often audio hits for main kick/snare... sometimes just midi.

either play in thru pads or keys, or alesis controlpad.

not into the handsonic, but love v-drums.

Draw it in by hand. Lots and Lots and Lots of counting. I find I write a good 2 or 3 metronome instruments in as well, so I can get the really fine points bang on.

Synths I always play in though, unless it's just long chords. i find it sound natural that way.
