It's obviously not even close to underground. I'm hearing very similar (albeit shittier) production techniques in commercial (dirty south) rap, and have been for the last year or so. Shows are attracting larger and more diverse crowds (in the US anyway). Bassnectar, while not strictly dubstep, is still bass driven music and is selling out medium sized venues all over the country.
I'd say that in order to attract larger and larger crowds people are going to have to start switching shit up from simple wobbelz. More and better vocals? More acoustic instruments? More intricate melodies and harmonies?
Where do you all think dubstep is going as a direct, where would you like it to go, and when do you think the masses will get sick of it and move on to the new 'scene'?

I'd like to see more acoustic instruments and that's an idea I've been playing with a bit, but mostly because I suck at synthesis and I do enjoy the more intricate melodies and harmonies. Bit tired of songs that consist of two pads repeating with nothing but a sub and changing drum line... But that's just my own taste and while I might not like that side of dubstep there's no reason why I have to indulge in it because dubstep is probably one of the most varied genres that exist. I guess my view is that as a genre with no defining features but 'bass heavy, half time drums, 140 bpm' (and even those aren't written in stone) it really goes wherever you want it to go.

I don't know where Dubstep is going or where it'll be in a year or two, but I'm gonna stay faithful to my roots and keep making bass music regardless of what happens I'mma be the rock in the river (of popular music opinion that is)...
i hope it's going more to musical content and not engineering
aka purple sound, experimental hip hop, the reverbed soaked real shit like james blake and mt kimbie
not dubstep tempo, but even that is being blurred by the most innovative artists atm

Well some dubstep is still underground. I don't think the stuff I play is all that popular right now. The stuff that is going mainstream especially stateside is making me sick to the stomach. This emostep crap wil burnt itself out in no time tho I think. Who fucking knows? I think the thing to do is just stick to your guns and do what you think is right. Selling out for the bookings and beatport charts is just going to make things worse. I have to be honest I am feeling pessimistic about where things are going but I never put all my eggs in this genre. I will be making music regardless of what happens.

I'm really not in touch with what it's doing around the rest of the US, but I know here in Central TX, it's not leaving anytime soon. Fidget was big here for a while, that's pretty much all that was going on. Dubstep started taking over about a year ago here, and it's grown way bigger than I thought it would. I was pretty happy with what it was doing, and now it's STILL growing in strength. I don't see anything stopping it, or grabbing people's interest more anytime soon. Not even close. Not even electro, which would've been like crazy talk here a a year and a half ago.
You guys would hate it though, it's 90% brostep ;p.
Moral of the story, Austin's gonna be a lot of WOBBLEWOBBLEWOBBLEWOBBLE for a while, imo.

id like dubstep to get so much space that you cant even hear the sounds anymore, they would be that well mixed down they would be invisable to the ear...
