creating 8 bit (nes) sounds?

alright, i subjected by nsb brethren to a question about hardstyle squelches, so you lot get the 8 bit question.

i can get some pretty 8 bitty sounds using mulitplex in massive, but i'm looking for some more genuine nes kind of sounds. samples would be cool, but learning how to synthesize the typical nes music sounds would be more useful in the long run.

any help appreciated lads.

Inb4 deadly habit!

Have you thought about buying an old gameboy and some music cartridges for it?

Work with the waveforms what the nes uses..

Square, Pulse and Saw.

Check the "Bit Reduced" and "Video Game Basics" pack. Make sure you have a synth what can handle new waveforms. You could go out and get one of those 8bit synths but surely this is more of a adventure :).

Also, reference, this.

alright, have you got a synth what will let you import your own waveforms? Something like Octopus, Absynth or Alchemy.

Its really just a matter of clicking "load" and finding the waveform you want

Magical 8 Bit Plug is a nice freeware VSTi to create the sounds you're looking for.

I found a nice 8-bit vst but it was windows only (Logic user)

So I just used some square wave in massive -> bit crusher -> distortion. Job done.

Don't forget that due to the limitations of the sound the composers for old 8-bit track's used to write some really complex stuff, contrapuntal patterns and a lot of layering to get something that sounded interesting.

Edit: not writing anything tonight, need to sleep

no doubt. listened to heaps of nes songs yesterday and there are some tight fuckin pieces out there. also a bunch of numbers what only need a phat beat to turn into instant killer d&b, breaks and dubstep.

You can't get the effect you want with a bitcrusher? That's what those things are made for :)

The quadraSID is a good vst too.

EDIT: somebody posted tweakbench, I have all the tweakbench vsts and they're all good.

And I just remembered a while ago I got a NES and a Sega emulator for my laptop mostly to play the old games on but you can sample a lot of stuff of those too which works well.
