I am new to producing my own music and i just had a quick question for a veteran, or anyone who creates dubstep for that matter. When creating your bassline is it more common to record/bounce individual samples then effect them and place them where you want or, just play the straight bassline on your soft synth then record or draw in your automation later? Is there a secret to this, or some sort of hybrid method? Also if its simply a user choice could some one give me some pros/cons of both? Thanks for your time, sNoFlc

Both really, it depends what sound you want. The crazy unnatural sounding morphing type of synths and basses are resampled multiple times in most cases. More straightforward sounds can be automated easily, even with a morphing effect depending on the synth or sampler's features. The main pro to sampling them is probably more control over it. You can chop it up, effect only certain parts, and free up resources at the same time. Sequencing audio offers many more capabilities than just sequencing MIDI. Resampling is usually considered "destructive editing" meaning once you change it, you can't go back, but you can get around that by saving multiple versions.

Thanks wormcode, i'll give the sampling method a try. I'll be sure to create multiple playlists as well as a "safe" track to avoid editing my the whole file, so i'll just be editing that particular region. Again thank you for the input, its much appreciated

hybrid. i usually synthesize sounds and then manipulate the audio after (effect, chop, transposing etc)

I use a bit of both but never have I used both methods on one track...I might have a go today just as an experiment.
