whats YOUR rules on judging which tune should be the final product?
i got like 10 different versions of a few tunes, and picking the best is quite hard imo

If you can't pick the best then you're not finished. It obviously means you're capable of doing better if you like them all.

The best for me is logically the one with mastered/mixed down the best.

You should be able to achieve the same standard on each version.
It ought to be the one that gets your head nodding the most.

I never write more than one version; just one long path to the end product.
I have tried to remix my old stuff, and i either end up with pretty much the same thing (as it was 'perfect' (IMO) before), or a completely different tune.
Not a lot of help there i suppose!
Interesting how other people work tho.

yea this, the only thing i have versions for is when i might suddenly decide to drastically change something then its only there for backup incase i wake up and think "what was i thinking last night, was i stoned?"

This, I typically have two project files 'Working' which is where I have a cluttered, ugly workflow, mixer chains from hell, ect. then Im constantly bouncing stems and putting them in 'Mixing' which is where the final mixdown occurs... Only one progression, ect though.

For me personally, I just have the one version of a track, I don't think iv the creativity in me for 10 different versions i struggle enough with making one

lol same here. i suppose the difference here is when i go about deleting/adding entire sections/elements, these people save each and every such deletion/addition of entire selections/elements.
that must do ya brain in.

yeah, why are you making ten versions of the same song?

because commonly any producer with a brain in their head knowing how finicky technology can be saves a seperate version of their tune as it progresses with every significant edit to it

actually deadly makes a good point. say your shit crashes...
but i think it's pretty clear the op wasnt talking about that (or perhaps he does that as well i don't know)
that's another thing i miss about ableton. as good of a program as it was, shit crashed at least twice a week. but whenever it did crash, it would recover and load some sort of auto-save shit where your tune would reload from the very last major change or whatever,.

Oh sorry I thought the OP meant out of your whole collection of tunes rather than a few examples of the same one

Generally for me its a haphazard but linear timeline, ill end up with 30 versions but generally its in the last 2 or 3 (the best mix that is), but I often end up stripping back tunes and changing genres and elements many times before it really feels "right". If youve got a few similar ones bounce them all and smack em on random in winamp or somewhere and do something else for an hour , the right one mightnt jump out but the wrong one certainly will.
