this is really inspiring stuff. if you have never heard it, check it out . the first 3 albums at least. heavy bass, simple meditations. good listening for dubsteppers.

agreed. and a huge part of the sound is sampled vinyl grooves. crackles and pops and hiss mixed with dub bass and almost invisible beats. awesome stuff.

when I would play garage and dubstep for 3 or 4 hours, I would always end up with either pole or rhythm and sound by the end of the night.

I thought it was all from a broken filter (A Pole-Waldorf, hence the name). But yeah Pole is awesome. Revolutionary avant garde 'nu dub'. Anyone know of music like this as good as Pole?

Pole was the engineer for the German techno label Basic Channel, so anybody who's into his style should bone up on classic Basic Channel. Basic Channel is also now reissuing / remastering / re-dubbing classic dub reggae as Rhythm & Sound as part of a series called 'Burial Mix.' Heavy heavy heavy heavy heavy.

I thought it was all from a broken filter
that's true.

i put him on live in sheffield a few years ago and he told us the story of how it had been presented to him as a birthday gift by some friends and he'd dropped it. when he tried plugging it in and salvaging it the random malfunctioning noises became the basis for his whole sound.

those crazy germans eh? :D

Thats an awesome story. Oops I broke my gift but oops I just invented some of the dopest music ever.

What about stuff better than Pole? Cuz I always thought he was the best but I haven't heard too much of such music (the german dub revival) and always suspected he wasn't really the pinnacle of the scene.

Pole's a don.

People here might also wanna check Bernd Friedmann's stuff (often as Burnt Friedman), and all the back catalogue on his label Nonplace.

The Staedtizism comps on ~scape are rather excellent too.

no one is better than pole at what he makes. that is exactly why i had to start this thread. he and christoph de babalon are two people i feel, stand alone in what they do. two rare gems in modern music making.

maurizio is one to check as well, more 4/4 but nice atmosphere, similar to R&S, Basic Channel...

i saw pole about 6 years ago or so at the cooler in nyc.
it was incredible. he was so physical in his mixing, completely ecstatic as he would use him whole being to twist a knob... it was nice to see that at the time, i saw way too many 'checking my email' laptop shows around then.
there was also µ-ziq, Scanner, Pole @ the anchorage in 2000. unbelievable. the best part was he was hidden somewhere, there was 'nothing' to focus on except the sound, ill never forget that. dont think i have those records anymore... dont know why.

also check 'nah fi throw it away' by tikiman on main street.
deep, deep tune...

BC 05-09 + Basic Reshape

M6, M7

although my personal favorites are M4/4.5/5
