Why sample?

A basic question I know, I tried searching n using the resource but couldnt find this, sorry if its a repost.

Basically, I understand why u would sample bits from movies etc/game effects etc and i know hip hop has a big sample culture. But I was wondering why u would sample to make dubstep (bass drum, snares, cymbals, bass notes etc) rather than make the sounds from scratch using a DAW? does it affect the eventual sound? thanks

I think that (In terms a drum samples) it just makes your workflow easier because (usually) the samples are already processed etc. I know that I've tried sampling random drum shots and they've come out sound like crap. As far as bass sounds, most producers here make their own. Why rip something that's not yours when you can just as easily make it yourself.

Well it should seem fairly obvious. Sampling is a great time saver because there are so many good samples, especially for drums that it is not at all hard to find what you are looking for. I would say sure if you made everything from scratch it would effect the sound for good or bad, who knows im sure you could synth some killer snares if you want to but you would find most people just sample them and add effects. The answer is that there is no answer its how you use your tools.

You are often capturing all other little artefacts and imperfections that give the samples certain characteristics or the processing that sample went through in it's creation, that just well sound nicer than some digital clean synth sounds pre processed.

^^^!!!

Personally I can't stand listening to that type of electronic music that's just all synth and no sampling. Just feels plasitcy to me.

couldn't be arsed to read all the answers so i'll gladly take the rap if this is exactly what everyone has already said. why would anyone (i'm pretty sure rare people do) make their drums themselves from scratch. making your own synth patches is a different thing.

Plus there's the whole thing of happy accidents and unexpected stuff that comes out of working with samples - things that collide and don't quite fit and little bits that sometimes turn into a whole new thing. Like the 'woo, yeah' on the Think break, for instance.

sort of off topic but this reminded me of something...

there was a set of drums set up in this radio station I used to play at and someone left a crappy radio shack mic on a boom in the corner...

my friend was bangin out some live beats and the way the kit sounded through that shitty old mic was golden

like an old 60's break

I'd love to be able to replicate that

it's just a creative decision really, sampling is another tool for making electronic music

in a world where everyone and their dog has the same synths, sampler presets, effects units and workstations you have, a good way to get a really original sound is by sampling, as perverse as the notion is. Burial, Photek, Amon Tobin, the people with the most individual and interesting sounds in underground electronic music were using samples almost exclusively during their best works.

hum samples is a form of celebration of our musical patrimony...

but thats the hip hop head in me...

i just cherish old music...

the more u sample the more u get into those things...

sampling old records, u dont just sample sounds, u sample soul. and thats no artsy-overstatement...

that + the above

btw dh, love the sub on that one...

I just think tho, couldn't i just sample a bunch of dubstep tunes to make a new track but it wouldn't be very original? N can noone tell me a big track that uses no samples (e.g. Digital mystikz, skream, etc)
