I just got Reason 5, and im having some significant issues using it on my Powerbook Mac running OS X 10.5.8

the issue ive been having is that many of the virtual synths dont have a preview option, every tutorial i watch they seem to preview it without hitting a button, almost like they are just hitting a key on the keyboard, however, regardless of what i try i cant preview the subtractor or drop it onto the track below, im sure its an easy fix, what do i need to do?

Maybe they are actually using a keyboard? Or i don't know about Reason, but Logic has a caps lock keyboard if you just need to quickly hear a synth patch or don't have access to a controller.

i dont have a keyboard, and it dosent seem like hes manually making the bassline, just taking a loop and modifying it, however, i cant preview the loops in reason or drop them onto the track line below. it works with the drum machine, but not with the subtractor

well yeah you have to draw in the notes in the sequencer, or record them if you have a midi keyboard

i was watching a tutorial, and he uploaded a beat, and then modifyed it, so when i load a beat, i have no idea how to find out what it sounds like

well, as you know, the synth and sampler patches are not loops, so there will be no automatic preview played back when you click them. They do load while the browser is open, however, and can easily be previewed with a midi controller. Since you don't have one, the best thing to do would probably be to draw in a couple of midi notes for a bar or two, loop it (with its sequencer track soloed), and continue browsing patches while the sequence loops. Any one0shot samples or REX's will auto-play once. Unless the samples are too lengthy.
