let's talk about studio desks. My lovely other half has decided to give me a proper desk for my b-day, but DAMN some of them are expensive

so, what have you got, what do you like, what don't you like?

Good converters and sweet outboard is almost always a better investment. A console better than ITB mixing is just too expensive to be an advantage. Midas and Speck Audio come to mind as worthwhile OTB alternatives, but I'd pick decent conversion and some good compressors + EQ any day.

sorry, didn't mean a mixing desk, meant an actual desk - something to put my stuff on

and I agree. Give me proper converters and one nice EQ comp and pre.

Hah! There says how nerdy I am, rather.

For (furniture) desk-wise, I've kinda always been partial to the Ikea desk Jerker. Not only is it a badass name, but it's cheap, all kinds of modular and holds alot of crap.

It's so good it even has a shrine.

"Real" studio furniture, even retail stuff, always has silly markup when you're on home/project studio budgets, but the Studio RTA stuff is a pretty good deal.

you can build some custom shit for ALOT cheaper... providing that you have the tools, dexterity, and space to do it.
but if you don't and you live in the states try craigslist. i saw a proper one on there yesterday but it was $600

I've got a Z-760 i think thats whats it called, with height adjustable top shelf, n bad boy 4u rack thing underneath. Well made, easy to put together, light, yet solid, and.. err... grey. At the time it seemed to be the best thing on the market, i think there's more about nowadays.

I love it. Money well spent, no going back, its fucking genius, eronomics is sooo key, you'll love it.

has anyone ever built their own shelves for the jerker? i'm thinking of making some of the side-shelves, doesn't seem like it'd be too tough... some brackets with appropriate size screws/weight handling etc, some wooken platforms screwed to the brackets...

anyone got any experience?

Just build something, then you got what you want!

My current desk is a bit of wood resting on two flightcases. Works a treat, cost about £10 for the bit of wood, done deal!
