if you could block phone numbers from contacting you with a push of a button
also if you could block people from inviting you to events on facebook similarly
i contend we would live in a drastically different world

You can block numbers on most phones, you can block people from facebook?

one where you would actually have to have real life social interactions with people like when we were kids and there was no widely available internet and cell phones

I don't get bothered too much on the phone
and I can happily ignore events and posts on facebook so it probably wouldn't make much of a difference

A world without Facebook would surely be something like it was 3 or so years ago. Not so unimaginable.

dunno man, lovely family feeling today at the dubkraft deeper session and facebook helped a lot, fuck it anyway!
it's true i also spent some time targeting only local friends with my spam...
i think it's not working without compromises from both sides

wouldn't it be great if the internet had never existed?

tbh i think people of my generation (20-23) were like the last kids to grow up really knowing achilddhood without the internet, im happy about that.

it usually hasn't existed
so it would be the kind of world that it usually is
but this will only be true for the next 4 billion years or so
perhaps.

i'm not. people are way too socially detached and technology dependent for even the simplest things.

so much time i've wasted on the internet it's ridiculous . somehow i think i could have have had a more interesting life so far if it wasn't for the internet, might have encouraged to do more constructive things with my time, plus you wouldn't know what you're missing if it had never been invented so that wouldn't be an issue. it's helpful for finding new music and that but i don't think we really need shit like facebook, but now it's here, it's hard to think off life without it. plus my procrastination issue probably wouldn't be as bad

shit i was on bbs's and irc since i first had a modem and hand me down computer mainly because i love exploring technology, programming, electronics, and telecommunications
unfortunately since computers and high speed internet and cell phones became common place most people don't use them so much for useful tasks, but for retarded things like watching videos on youtube at work...
it's cool we have all this technology and convenience, just most of it is going to waste (that and multitasking seems to be lost on most people)

no im happy about having a childhood without the internet for myself, i agree about the detachment thing but i think its a unique position of being disconnected at a local level but being increasingly more connected at a larger one. fundamentally with an increase in population + an increasing level of local social detachment you just can only surmise that you got more 'lonely' people now who would have been lonely before the internet came about. unless you think the internet has changed people.
i dont think the internet has changed people, people use the internet in the same way that before they would have used other methods of communication/entertainment/escapism etc- those who sit on the internet now would have just done something comparable pre-internet.

i should probably rephrase what i put above, i dont think the internet has changed people in a more radical way than other societal advancements

Absolutely love the internet. Grew up and actually made it most of the way through university before the internet caught on. I can tell you that most ordinary people were far far dumber before the internet.
A lot of shit could get way better, but overall, I give internet 4.5 out of 5 stars.
ps - fuck facebook.
re the cell phone, fuck that, meeting up with people, just generally doing shit was a pain in the ass before the cell phone.

i can't block people on my cell phone. and i can't block event invites. and i see a parallel.
