So I have been producing with Windows XP for some time now and frankly I never really thought about actually getting my CPU up to terms with the sounds I am trying to produce.
I have been searching the web and found a few helpful tips, but if anyone out there experienced in the world of XP has some knowledge, feel free to share
Found this:

Find a copy of XP performance.
It`s a build by some dude, can`t remember who.
He strips it down to basic functionality and necessary drivers.
Boots in seconds, stable as hell and really quick.

Theres a few things you can do to keep your pc running nice:
Disable any unnecessary programs from starting up at boot. This can be done through msconfig, and can free up memory and cpu.
Disable any unnecessary services(i.e disable print spooler if you don't use a printer). This can free up memory.
Run an antivirus scan every few days to make sure theres no malware on your system. I use malwarebytes, its free and seems to be pretty good. I don't use antivirus as i'm careful what i download, and don't like the performance hit of running an antivirus in the background all the time.
Defrag regularly.
For audio, its good to set cpu priority to background services. This can be done in control panel, system, advanced tab(i think thats right i haven't used xp in a while)
You don't really need xp performance edition. You just need to make sure that theres not much running in the background, as you want your cpu to dedicate 100% to the task you're doing, rather than running some spyware or junk software in the background.
At the end of the day, there is no substitute for a faster cpu, decent soundcard and more memory. So if you can afford it and are having performance problems, upgrade your system. Any of the intel i3, i5 and i7's are awesome cpu's and will provide ample performance for audio, and with 4gb+ of ram you won't be running into problems.
