USB Mic?

Hey guys.

Can you tell me, is a USB Mic good enough for recording vocals? Or do I have to buy a 'proper' one and an external soundcard?

What Mic should I ask mum to get me for christmas? Remembering that drunk, loud and wanna be MC's will be shouting into this aswell so I think it needs to have a good 'pop filter thinggy' ;)

Thanks in advance :D

- Problems with latency
- Problems with high noise
- Problems with limited frequency bandwidth

If you are happy with the above then go for it :W:

I would get a dedicated audio interface and a chaper/er mic, you could then at a later date upgrade to a better mic without having to buy an interface again

What interface would you suggest? I literally have no knowledge when it comes to hardware

i've got a samson G Track mic (USB) to an iMac which works nicely for vocals. quality is great, and I can't tell any difference in latency compared to an external sound card (USB). saves a lot of room and cabling which is good, but you limit yourself a bit with it compared to an audio mic. and if your using with a PC, ASIO drivers can be really difficult with different USB inputs and outputs.

heard lots of demo recordings from blue yeti's and apogee mono's (uno's? whatever the single-channel apogee is). nearly all useable.

at that level of microphone, having a controlled room environment helps enormously. Even just hanging packing blankets and creating a small, deadened space will give the vocals more heft.

Value for money = Focusrite (the saffire 6 is £140)

if you need cheaper I would choose a Lexicon alpha over usb-mic anyday (around £60)

well the pops nothing to do with the microphone itself, its the filter you buy separately. and you would want a microphone that picks everything up anyway, not one that cuts things out.

get a fake SONY ECM-DS70P, they go for around five bucks, haven't tried one myself yet but I'm sure it can't be a horrible deal, apparently they break really easily and sound a lot different then the real ones (which in this case isn't a completely bad thing.) it isn't usb it's 1/8 inch. Probably worth a shot hahahah

Get a Shure SM57, incredibly strong microphone, cheap, and you can pretty much record anything with it.

This is great for sampling random stuff, my mate hyas this and we have sampled quite a bit weird noises, with good quality.

Just remembered that I own a hercules rmx controller. It has an inbuilt soundcard. Will that work well with a mic?
