really want a mac pro, but unfortunately i seem to have misplaced my 2000 pounds.

whats everyones experience with hackintosh stuff? what happens with new osx updates? do you have to buy new hardware everytime there's an update etc. do they often fuck up? does all normal software work with them? im only gonna get it if its as reliable as getting a mac pro.

safe. i already run logic on my macbook, but cba with a macbook pro and jobs can fuck off if im gonna pay 2 grand for a mac pro.

Hi mate i used a hackintosh to see if i wanted to buy/use logic, found it really helpful without having to waste £1000 on an imac before finidng out what it was like

- my experience was ok, but took a lot of fiddling to get it up and running it really depends on hardware and finding the correct kexts for your hardware.
what happens with new osx updates?
- as far as im aware it was not recommended to do any updates, but check the links wub posted above as i cant be cetain.
do they often fuck up?
- YES in my expereience...
does all normal software work with them?
- The software works fine if you have everything running ok, updates may cause trouble though.
im only gonna get it if its as reliable as getting a mac pro.
- imo nothing is better than the real thing. (peice of mind knowing that logic/software update isnt gonna fail and cause your system not to boot, and also i dont think time machine backups work correctly with a hackintosh which are quiet useful )

overall it is good if you want to try logic and get to grips with it, BUT if your serious, save up and buy the real thing hope this is a little help!

When building the machine, check if the parts are osx compatible and build as close to a mac spec as possible, I done it a few years ago to run final cut pro and my build it ran without any major problems.

has anyone built one recently? apparently the reliability has improved drastically thanks to new gigabyte mobos. i guess for a purely studio computer, updates arent too important. (the studio i work at is still running 10.4 and protools 7.

dont mind taking a while to get it running but as long as once its running it wont crash half way through a session.

I havent heard of anyone building one ofnthese in a while.

ive got a 10.6 snow leopard hackintosh laptop, runs great and softwares all install and run perfectly. The spec of the laptop has limited the use of music software, so it hasn't seen much production use. Not too sure about building a tower, wouldn't you have to compromise on spec for compatibility? I've never updated either, seems like a risk incase of driver updates etc.

nah you can get fkn ridonk specs. i7 processors and shit. i think its more work, cos you have to source the individual components that a compatible. from wat ive been told so far, after the initial hard work it is eventually stable. so im definitely leaning towards this. the updates dont bother me too much, its only gonna be for studio stuff.

I'm running a dual boot of Windows 7 and a Hackintosh. It's nice to be able to play around on Logic every so often but it can be a bit of a bitch to set up.
I'd have a look at insanelymac and search out iAtkos if you want it a bit easier.
Over all I've not had any problems with stability after I had set everything up and if I unplug one hard drive from my system it just runs Windows 7 which is a fail safe in case the Hackintosh messes up.

sounds like its worth a try, maybe do a dual/triple boot as well. I got this driver pack for my laptop, which helped with shit like brightness, and expose keys, depends how identical of a mac experience your after. also go for 10.6, i read somewhere that it will boot on nearly any intel, instead of the older versions like tiger where you'd need loads of kernels for everything.

safe, well think im jsut gonna find a spare apple keyboard. then im gonna assume that the expose keys and shit will work. prob gonna do the dual boot thing, jsut out of safety so that i know i can always fall back onto windows if osx throws a hissy fit.

I've used one for quite a while now. quad booting XP, Windows 7, OS X 10.6.5, and Fedora.

Mine's been generally positive. It's not too difficult to install, and there's tons of walkthroughs and guides. Hardware can be a bitch. Some hardware is entirely incompatible and others only partially.

With updates you have to be careful. NEVER install the update regularly. You basically need to get patched version and workarounds to install them without screwing up your system.

I haven't had many issues with them; the only significant one was when I installed an update incorrectly and the entire thing got fucked and had to reinstall OS X. Other than that, it's always run smoothly, no crashes or anything like that.

I never had any issues at all with running certain software.

Like said before, it will never be 100% as perfect as the real thing. Personally, I think it's worth all the money you save though.

do the homework, especially regards the mobo & grphx card if you are gonna do it. download ALL the distros aswell. I had to go through all of them before one worked. grab a usb keyboard & mouse and always try both connections on the grphx card to test QE/hardware acceleration/resolution changes.

Logic 9 is stable in my experience and I can put silly amounts of fx on each channel. updating would fxxk up my system so im not doing them, im at 10.5.8.

In the future i would probably purchase a mac. I very impressed with the operating system & Logic & its native effects.

I fix windows machines for my job & it constantly reminds me how solid OSX seems by comparison.......

but its not really pirating. the only thing your breaking is the eula with apple, which isnt worth the paper its written on anyway. im buying components, buying osx, buying software and i already own a macbook. apple can fuck off if they want another 2 grand off me for an upgradeable computer if i can make one my self for 600.

I have done this to 2 lappys and a desktop all using different components.. some are easier than others, and some dont work at all. I would suggest getting very familiar with the insanelymac forums, as they will most likely have all the help you will need. Just keep in mind that those forums are just like DSF... there has most likely been a problem you are experiencing and an answer somewhere on the boards, so make sure you use the search.
