I'm trying to decide between the Alesis M1Active 520's or the KRK Rokit Powered 6 Generation 2's, I don't know much about monitors, and I'm kind of on a budget. Also, is a subwoofer needed with these monitors? Or with any monitors for that matter..

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I need to make a decision. I'm kind of leaning to the KRK Rokit's..

The 520's are lack any sort of real bass nate. So if you go for those you will need a sub as well. Bearing in mind tha a sub will cost you around £200 and they can be a pain in the arse to get sounding right. You might as well save up and get a pair of minoitors with decent bass response, Yamaha HS80M's are my personal favourties, thay go for about £350 a pair.

Cant really comment on the KRK's as Ive never used em. The six inch driver will give you slightly better bass response than the 5 inch one on the 520's but I cant say how they sound.....

I'd also like a bit of help, i'm torn between the Yamaha HS50m and HS80m

not sure i'm gonna need ones as big as the 80's but i dont wanna get the 50's realise they're too small and upgrade later anyway
plus i can get a pretty good deal on the 80's

The primary difference is that the 80's have a better bass response than the 50's. As long as your studio isnt tiny then I would go for the 80's.

Yeah that's what i'm struggling with.
The 50's have weak bass response, but are a lot cheaper.
Not sure i'd have enough room on my desk for the 80's. But they seem worth the extra dollah.
I'll probably end up going for the 80's, just wondering if i'll actually need them.

the HS80Ms didn’t look that big @ sam ash. but when i got em shipped to me from an ebay auction win…the boxes alone were HUGE. after unpacking them i was shocked at how big they were. that said, i was in the same boat, 50’s vs 80’s and I went with the 80’s and i am happy i did. got a pair for $524 usd shipped from ebay new never used.

I wouyld go with the 80's mate. You will get pissed off with the 50's after about 5 minutes.

Not hearing the bass whilst listening to/producing dubstep is quite simply not an option.

Oi, I use em and they're solid down to about 49hz, below that it drops off quite rapidly. Sure you miss it but you can mix the sub down on spectrum analysers. They go suprisingly low for a pair of 5"s

i was in a similar position a year or so back

i opted for the 50s, as i was moving around a lot and working in small rooms. 80s are MUCH MUCH larger, like, massive; the 50s are really compact

i was nervous about how the lack of sub would be a problem, but it's really not. there's still a lot of detail down there, just not chest rattling. im listening to el gato - blue - at the moment and the deep deep lows in that are nice and subtle, not absent. i was planning on investing in a sub but i don't really have much desire atm - just use my ultrasone 750s to see how my mixes translate in a bass heavy context

like anything it's about learning how your speakers sound.

but congrats on the yamaha decision regardless, i think loads of bass producers seem to think that loud bass is the only criteria for good monitors and ignore the shit mids and highs of some of hte KRKs etc. yamahas have the best detail in the mids and highs that i've heard, which is so useful if you're into adding texture and space to your productions.

biggest factor i would stress between 50s and 80s is SIZE, seriously go see the 80s, they'd leave me with no space on my desk. and don't worry about volume the 50s are wonderfully loud (and I imagine are probably better quality at lower volumes compared to hte 80s, seeing as they're really beautiful when you turn them up past midway)
