Just to get it out of they way first; I don't think it matters what software or whatever he uses. But if you're interested and don't wanna read all the links, Daddy Kev mentions that he used Reason for most stuff 'Los Angeles' and earlier and Ableton for his live stuff and 'Cosmogramma'.

Flying Lotus Production Techniques

Does anyone have any insight on the production techniques that he uses? Here is what I notice from his mixes/songs (This includes parts and tendencies not specifically production related):
1.) Heavy, Heavy use of sidechain compression
2.) Vinyl crackling sounds
3.) The drums are clearly not made to line up on grid
4.) Drums are extremely thick sounding
5.) Lowfi-ish sound
6.) Influences from classic video games
7.) Vibrato on keys/pads

Anyone have any suggestions, or ways which YOU make your material sound similar? Or maybe how he does?

And regular compression, he's got a very extensive rack, you can find pictures of it on his bookface.
2.) Vinyl crackling sounds
You know most of what he does is recorded on actual tape first right? I highly doubt he's sampling these things. He works with so many mic's and real studio musicians that artifacts just happen. That, and most youtube vids of his stuff are vinyl rips anyway.
3.) The drums are clearly not made to line up on grid
See above, he uses alot of studio musicians and micing... The drums on Satelliiittteee are a combination of desktop drumming, spoons, and Thundercat+Gene Cory on the drums/bass. Thundercat is a genious on all instruments. Gene is a genious with studio drumming. You do the math.
4.) Drums are extremely thick sounding
Der. Mic'd and sent to tape, or sampled from his vinyl.
5.) Lowfi-ish sound
it happens when you do an album the right way. You can generally hear the difference between his early day singles and his new stuff, but regardless, he's always copped to loads of recording and vinyl sampling, these things dont sound as perfect as synthesizers, which from what I see he doesnt incorporate all too often aside from select and very obvious tracks, like co-workers and pie face.
7.) Vibrato on keys/pads
Wow and flutter as well, Gaslamp Killer owns a rhodes, so Im sure they put it to use quite often, if you look up the mt washington jam sessions, they've got a serious pedal rack at their disposal too.

Stop immitating. The whole special thing about flylo is your glimpsing the mans soul. thats not your soul. its not a sound. he's the most diverse artist youll ever find. the reason it sounds like flylo, is cause flylo made it.

I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQcmhshWc6A where he talks about making sounds come from beside and behind you and I was like, buuullllshiit. So I put on Cosmogramma after cos I hadn't heard it in a wihle and then later I hear my phone vibrating behind me on the bed like it just got a text...but it hadn't and then I skipped back a few seconds and the muuuthafuucka had made the sound come from behind. It's about 3.21 on Do the Astral Plane and it's very faint but still...pwnd.
