christmas is a coming and the goose is getting fat.

might be a good opportunity for me to upgrade my midi controller. i want something on the lower end of the price spectrum, but which is still quality, and possibly similar to an mpc. well, really what i want is lots of knobs and a fair amount of buttons (pads) and sliders. what i don't need is piano keys. something that is ableton ready for improv live performance would be nice too.

please provide as many suitable recomendations as possible so i can shop around. thanks.

those akai mpds have piano keys, though right? my current controller has 61 keys and i never use them, so i want one with just knobs and faders and buttons.

thanks for the suggestions, they've got me started on the right track (i know nothing about midi controllers).

any opinions/experience/preferences with these products?:
Novation Nocturne
Korg Nanokontrol

thanks guys.

I use a novation Launchpad and Korg Nanokontrol for live improv stuff and for the money you cant get a better combination imho.
Launchpad for the great pads and ease of navigation through Ableton, Nanokontrol for the 4 banks of 9 faders and rotary knobs. As good if not better then any of the mpc/apc/trigger fingers business any day of the week and much much cheaper :m:

ooh, yeah the price tag on that one made me blush.

tekn, i think i'm gonna bite your styles there brother. start with having the wife get me the nanokontrol for xmas, then get myself that fancy shmancy launchpad sometime down the road.

That's a very easy choice, Akai MPD24. It's very similair to a mpc but it's way cheaper and it has the exact same
options (unless you don't want to include a laptop in your setup).

Best piece of gear I ever bought.

Absolutely agree. Two launchpads and two nanokontrols with a korg nano pad on the side to trigger samples I want to keep nearby is pretty much it for me. I only have one launchpad right now but plan on procuring the second shortly. Alternative to the korn nanopad is the very cool akai one with backlit pads, 6 knobs.
