Just wondering, how many of you guys pirate your music for free ? i have to say i am slightly guilty, but when i hear something that is like, insta-eargasm i do buy it

I may listen something on YouTube then cop it digitally, usually via iTunes, depending on availability.

utterly unwelcome on this forum. If you like music enough to listen to it, respect the artists enough to buy it. $1 a track or whatever isn't exactly a lot of money.

pirating is the antichrist.

when this forum dubstep was quite a tightly-wound community and everyone knew alot of the djs personally. Not only is buying music legal and fair, it also raises the profile of the legends who have been pushing the sounds from day who deserve commercial praise outside the dubstep community.

I'll be honest I do download alot of tracks of the internet illegally, but only tracks i own on vinyl I just cant be arsed to rip them

Yeah if i have bought the vinyl then i don't see the problem in getting the tune off the internet but other than that i buy everything else online.

depends wot ur doin with it i spose, if ur gona attempt to play out a tune thats only out on vinyl then ur bein a bit bait n silly...if its for ur own listenin pleasure then spose it wnt do as much harm, but should still support the music!

I'll admit that I did have a penchant of ripping tunes from YouTube then found sources where I could download 320 and VBRs but lately I've spent nearly £500 on vinyl the last couple of months and hope to spend even more. There are some tunes that you can't buy legitimately anymore without paying extortionate prices i.e. DMZ. But for instance I have most of Black Box but only the Seven releases on vinyl, with every intention of getting them all on 12"s. It's more of a try before you buy for me.

That's a hell of a question. I run a music blog (http://sweetlilbleeps.blogspot.com/) and end up getting sent a lot of EP's and albums from a select number of artists. I usually don't buy their tunes because I'm promoting them on my blog, but sometimes I do anyway.

I buy tunes when I want a 320 to play in my DJ sets, or when I want to support the artist. If I don't know an artist I 99.9% of the time will not buy their tunes, but will instead try and find them for free. If after that I become their fan and want more of their music, I'll buy it.

I've spent about $200 on vinyl, and over $1500 on Beatport over the last 2 years. That being said I still pirate music from time to time. Sometimes there are tunes that you want in your library that you just don't like enough to buy (doesn't happen too often for me).

This could ignite a whole other discussion about how paying for digital copies of music is phasing out, and only physical copies (i.e. CD's and vinyl) and live events are making money, but I won't go there. Another thread perhaps?

Doesn't iTunes quality end at 256kbps? Wouldn't you rather get a 320 from Beatport or Juno?

When I first got into music back in the early 2000s all you could do was buy vinyl. So as a 15-18 year old buying garage/jungle vinyl i must have spend a good couple of grand. However when i first got into dubstep (2006-2007) I would usually get most stuff off of blogs (not realising that some of these blogs were actually posting illegal rips/leaks etc). Then when I started DJing out I would notice the difference in the quality of some of the tunes. Maybe I was being ignorent but i didnt realise that I should be purchasing the music rather than getting it for free. Now I only purchase MP3s off of sites like Beatport, Juno, iTunes etc and will never pirate a track. Obviously if somebody is offering a free download of a track then this is fine, otherwise I will defo purchase them. The dubstep genre is still not the biggest in the world and these artists need our support. I am even purchasing vinyl again in order to rip as an MP3 to play out for tracks I cant purchase digitally.

I Pirate everything, from movies to software to textbooks to anything else that is made by these extreme capitalist corporations , that love exploits the average consumer. Dubstep on the other hand, I support the creativity of these people working so hard to help shape and expand this thing we call electronic music; which we all have a passion for. It would be a crime, not to compensate these individuals for their efforts.

As an artist who releases music and has had it pirated I in no way condone it and find it extremely frustrating, but to remove yourself from that world completly is bullshit and your lying to yourself.

If I wanna DJ it, I buy it, no questions. If you hear me spinning it it's been sent to me by a record label or i've bought it.
Mates have sent me clips / previews / mix cuttings but I would never illegally download a dubstep / drum n bass / underground music tune. How can you claim to be involved in a scene you don't support?
