oi oi... Forgot that it's supposed to benefit concentration for study. I'm also curious as to it's effects.

It flat-lines your dopamine system so you get a steady neural activation (too steady, turns kids in to zombies), it's basically a selective version of speed and works on the same neurotransmitters (dopamine and norepinephrine/adrenaline). Don't bother with it though, it's not even known for sure how it works (lots of prescribed drugs have unknown actions, anti-psychotic drugs actually state in their guidelines for use that how they work is unknown!)

one of those articles said the exact opposite. concentration at the expense of imagination and creativity doesn't sound like a recipe for producing good tunes

Shit, I've wrote 6,000 lines of code and barely 10% done.
Someone ping me a reliable source for this stuff please!

I used Provigil back in uni when I had basically a couple of months work to do in 5 nights.
Whenever you usually get the urge to procrastinate, that literally completely goes. I felt largely normal but was so single minded that I got it all rinsed, and it sounds pretty cliche but I even ended up cleaning both the communal areas AND my mates rooms.
I would recommend it for EXTREME situations where your back is against the wall and there is a lot resting on the result. If it is not a once or twice in a lifetime situation I really wouldnt bother - especially not to do something as frequent as you guys probably make beats or write code. I did a lot of research into it at the time, and there is obviously a massive chance of you not being able to operate as well without it, and it is not a drug you want to to long term as there is no research into the long term effects. If its not essential, dont bother, rely on what your parents gave you naturally.
As for Ritalin, I definately would never bother.
From the article -
"I paced and agonised and finally concluded that taking narcolepsy drugs when you don’t have narcolepsy is just stupid. Our lack of knowledge about what it does to your brain was, in the end, a deal-breaker for me. Perhaps in sixty years we’ll know for sure it’s safe, and I will have spent my life at only sixty percent brain-capacity – but I’d rather risk that than brain damage. So I have cut a deal with myself. I am keeping a pack in the bathroom cabinet for the days when I am really knackered and have to be able to work fast and fluently – but I won’t ever take more than two or three a month"

these are the boys. they're called modalert or modafinil.

he says that the 200mg ones are the way forward (after much experimentation). he did a 12 hour session the other day to get some essays done. he took 1 200mg one at 9am and then another 200mg at about 3pm and it got him through the whole day.
postage is meant to be a bit steep though.

Yeah I was thinking that after i'd said that.
Although it may be good for the mundane things that don't require much creativity. Like a night of sample finding/organising or whatever.

Monday I had three finals, so i stayed up sunday night and all through monday with my nose in the books. Ended up pulling two As and a B, which is surprising considering I hadn't really studied much this semester. Taken in low doses, like 1-2 XRs, you focus on whatever youre doing and it puts off sleep for another 8 hours. People I know in med school pull 48-60 hours at a time on ritalin with no sleep. That's probably horrible on you, but a low dose is mostly benign. When crushed up and put in a glass with water for faster absorption, 2-3 can make you have a really motormouthy, energetic high and it works excellently with weed.

I was prescribed it when I was about 15 for ADHD. Since then I've had quite a bit of experience with working on amphetamines.
I took it for a while, made me work like an absolute beast. Straight A* all around. Work would be stupidly fun and you'd spend abnormally long hours working on it. However, it turned me into a zombie: I lost my sense of humour, the ability to socialise, etc.
That was only for about a couple of months and I then refused to take it. They then came up with something called Straterra: you take it for a month before it starts working, at which point it lodges itself in your system and consistently levels you out. This scared me, along with a couple of reports of kids dropping dead from it, so I stopped that too before it had the chance to work. Little blue capsules freaked me out.
In my freshman year of uni, I started taking ritalin again for studying and exams. This brought on a new problem - unless it's prescribed and controlled thoroughly, you've landed yourself a nice little meth addiction in the middle of finals. I'd spend half my exams wondering exactly how much I should take to get the right kick - and the other half regretting that I'd taken too much and could no longer concentrate. The second year, I instead refrained from quitting smoking weed, but didn't take the ritalin. This worked so much better.
The come-downs on ritalin were like nothing I've ever experienced in my life, including a whole plethora of massive doses of recreational drugs. A single dose would make me work for about an hour, before developing a furious uncontrollable rage, followed by crushing moodswings - random fits of crying and so on, which were unbelievably out of character for me; it was the first time I'd cried in years. I distinctly remember passing a baby in the street on a ritalin come-down and wanting to punch it in the face. Add all this up with the insomnia and it becomes a serious problem.
Now, this week, in fact, I had a big bag of speed left over from the weekend. I had to get an essay done, so thought - what the hell - and took it. Kept me going all night with high levels of concentration, and no come down whatsoever. I could control the dosage a lot better by bumping it, and it really helped me get my act together. I'm pretty much still feeling it now, writing this, but havn't done it for a good couple hours. 1 pill of ritalin seemed to be as strong as about the whole gram of street speed put together. I'm thinking that this is quite similar to other ADHD drugs like Adderral and Dexedrine. I kind of forgot how bad my ADHD was and this put it into perspective. I'm going to the doctor and trying to try a new type, that won't have so many aspects.
So there's my essay, in summary: try a couple different ones and be careful. Amphetamines ain't nothing to fuck with, and if you don't control it right, you'll end up with a meth addiction at the worst time possible.
