good stab sounds

can anyone give me some basic methods of getting stab sounds going? ive been trying with no luck. i use ableton if people want to get more specific. but broader descriptions are more welcome, so i can get my own creative juices flowing

Sample them from old funk/soul records.

to get the general stab "shape", use a sharp envelope on a lowpass filter so it drops from high to low. Tweak the envelope to get the desired shape of said stab and voilĂ
Also works if you stick an envelope on the volume or use a ramp LFO instead of an envelope
Sounds nice on square waves.

FInd a crowd of people and go to town

nah not even.... the best stab sounds come from pumpkins!
stabbing flesh just doesn't sound realistic enough!!
tis what a sound designer for Weta Workshop reckons anyways!
