Simultaneous WDM/ASIO/AC-3 Playback

I have an EMU 0202 and it only supports playing back 1 stream format at a time. This means that, if I'm mixing a song and want to compare it to a reference track, I have to close my DAW, open the mp3 in an audio player (Windows Media Player, iTunes, QuickTime, etc...), listen to the mp3, close the mp3 player, then re-open the DAW. What are your thoughts on this? Are most soundcards like that?
And finally please recommend me an USB interface that can play multiple stream formats at a time, has 48v phantom power and has great audio quality.(- 200 euros)
I'm gonna have to change my EMU but I'd hate to see it go because the sound is so clear.

which ones? asio4all?
if I recall correctly, asio4all isn't a multiclient driver, which is the problem you're having. Try this one by steinberg:

I use ASIO EMU 0202 and only in ableton. But the problem is that my soundcard doesnt provide multiple stream playback at the same time. I'm wondering which soundcards do that have 48v phantom power and have good audio quality.

like I just said, the problem lies in the fact that you're not using a multiclient asio driver. try the one i linked.
as for another audio interface, check out the soundcards section of the production bible

I don't think its related to ASIO since it clearly says on EMU supportpage:
''The 0404 (I guess 0202 too then) USB only supports playing back 1 stream format at a time. Each of the 3 mentioned stream types has a priority associated with it. If a higher priority stream type is opened while a lower priority stream is already playing, the lower priority stream will stop playing. The stream priorities, from highest to lowest, are AC-3, ASIO, WDM. This also prevents recording from an ASIO or WDM application into another program.''
Anyways, Im looking at the native instruments Audio Kontrol 1. Any owners here, should I grab it?

My laptop does this when using ASIO drivers, but I just load the reference track into another channel in the DAW and mute it when until it's needed. Doing this helps me get the reference track at the right level as well.

I do it also, I just copied this from some support forum so that people would get the idea.

But trying to listen itunes or youtube while your DAW is open - now that's not possible im pretty sure

I have a EMU 0202 also, i never knew about this problem. I just tried playing a MIDI tune in Reaper, looping a section over, and watched a video on youtube, both worked fine, no problems at all.
Have you made sure its running at 2.0 and not usb 1? sometmes it has a mind of its own and chooses the slower version and causes all kind of problems. if it is, jsut turn the EMU off at the phones control on the front, unplug, then plug it all back in and turn on. make sure u do it when all audio programs are closed.
*EDIT* turns out i was using the directsound out but it was still processing through my EMU to my monitors, tried with EMU ASIO and got your problem.. hmmm sorry dude, no idea!

Have you got a release sound driver in background option in your DAW? I know fruity has one, that might help
