figured since i've been making ambient and dark ambient a lot more lately, and there are no real topics on this time to start one as it's useful as hell in dub and dubstep
those atmospheric drones and sounds, those reverb drenched bits that make your skin crawl or want to drift off to the astral plane
lets get some atmospheric and ambient sound design shit going for a change

Yes mate! I love using samples to make weird atmospheres. Though I'm quite boring with it, normally just the usual suspects. Reversed with delay on it then I get distracted by something else.
When I used to make aggro stuff I would record myself making animal noises into my mic then pitch it down, distort it, bit of reverb and put them instead of symbol crashes at the start of every 16 bars. Recently I have been getting more into the drawn out atmospheres though, but again I'm not usually very adventurous. If I come up with anything worthy of sharing I'll post it but until then I'm excited to hear the ideas other people have had.

I did something like this for the last sample contest - stretched out one of the samples (i think a horn?) to like 8 bars and whacked it through a reverb. Ended up sounding like the noise the martian walkers make in War Of The Worlds.

have any of you tried timefreezer? it exports looped wavs which you just throw in your sampler. The difference from other granulizers is that it can make really clean sounds, depending on which portion of the sound you selected.
just stretching, pitching, and eq/filtering can do wonders to start

Heh.... Lustmord. It's what Satanic D&D geeks listen to when they're humping in the dark.
Seriously tho-
I basically made a whole ambient/drone/experimental project from Paulstretch. Google 'Sarcolith.'

lustmord is why i asked for tibetan horns heh
you heard his dub shit? (before someone pops a blood vessel yes dub not dubstep)
it's so easy to make ambient with paulstretch lazily, but it's a great tool

Lustmord dub?!?! No fucking way! Um, I demand that you hook me up NOW.
It always struck me that folks like him, David Tibet, Deutsch Nepal, etc. would be naturals at film sound design, though - only Graeme Revell seems to be really active there for some reason. (Which reminds me, his 'Insect Musicians' is also required listening for samplists... all songs were made with nothing but insect samples.)
Paulstretch is definitely easy to abuse. I found that after the initial novelty wore off of stretching/smooshing every sound I could think of just to see what it sounded like, I started thinking of specific applications for it. I've also found that it can be pretty hard to get some of those sounds to sit well in a mix with other non-stretched sounds too for some reason, esp. if you add harmonics.
that should be the transitional progress from reg lustmord to dub to even more dub
using orig vid's tune in my sets atm and editing and doing a remix for my own purposes as it's so perfect
the percussion, atmosphere, tempo, everything is so perfect for a real dubstep set

coinkydink deadly i've been using more and more drones in my stuff. usually synthesising them as it's quicker, just love the bed of sound i can create to rest the track in.

For those that are using Reaktor, I have been loving the sounds that I've been getting by loading up some of my field recordings into the instrument Metaphysical Function.

OK, I remembered my headphones today ( ) and been listening to their tracks on Myblank, and it's pretty goddamn cool - I like it when tunes have a sense of humor especially.
Look forward to hearing what ya do with this sound Deadly.

if you use mac (I think it's mac only) the spectral drone maker by Michael Norris is fantastic.

Word, them Michael Norris plug ins are fantastic for drone/ambience stuff.

iv been makin a lot more tracks like this, finding it alot more interesting and fun to do as im often pretty unhappy with my percussion half the time.
heres something kinda newish Soundcloud
It's always good fun to mess with pitched-down synths (and slow, tape-stop- style effects)
Then drenching it in reverb and delay
Or time stretching metallic- sounding percussion hits.
Sidechaining different aspects so you get some sporadic pumping effect, etc...
D Blue glitch over some verb'd up slow, plodding drums, then sent to a delay got me some nice results, to
