I'd really advise buying an actual field recorder...the built in mics in an iphone aren't designed for capturing high quality samples...

Of course! There is also no pre-amp in the iphone so it will clip if you really drive it.
At the bottom of the article other field recorders are briefly discussed.
BUT you use what you have and the quality of the results are surprisingly good!

Yeah it seems like a good stop gap to use until you have the chance to get a proper recorder.

I'm getting a zoom H1 for my birthday in march and I have to admit I've been guilty of using my iphone to record samples before even though I have a shure mic XD

Shitty mics are awesome for recording incidental sounds and such. People should expiriment more with phone and laptop mics.

Agreed. Lower quality incidental sounds can still give your song some analog like character.

been using my iphone for ages to record samples and you know what else is something to think about...i think the iphone is better than field recorders because you dont constantly carry them around but your iphone is always on you ( it is your phone! ) when are you gonna be carrying around your field recorder all day? Theres been so many times where i heard some crazy sound or ill be at work ( i work construction ) and the cement mixer is going nuts boom i can easily pop my phone out and record it. Ive always thought this was a good point compared to the quality of sound you get out of the iphone, it is always on you.

I do actually intend to keep my zoom on me all the time. Except for when I'm at nights and the like which isn't very often.

My way is a tad bit simpler. I just record using the video camera. That way I can look at the video and remember what I was trying to capture. I just sync with iTunes and then pull the audio off of it. You have a way with words tho. This would have been my blog entry in it's entirety You didn't even get into some of the mics you can get for the iPhone.



I typically don't even strive for quality though. I like the nastiness of the samples I get with the iPhone.

Thanks for the feedback. I try to capture the community's knowledge. I know about the iphone mics but didn't think to write about it but I will revise the article now.

Grabbed iTalk. Looks decent. Pretty simple. I just recorded a percussion line using the built in recorder. Find out it's 64k, that isn't going to cut it although the sample I just took sounds great that way. iTalk is .aiff so I need to be using this from now on. Thanks. If 2 bucks is the upgrade then I'll cough it up. Being able to send straight to my dropbox is a useful feature.

its true. its relatively good quality...it records bass clearly without any audible distortion...I like it

I'm getting a Tascam DR-100 very soon with two XLR inputs for external mics! ^^
