I suspect that a lot of the big DJs are still going down the dubplate route and getting one off tracks cut from their fav digital mixes (a la dub, rave, jungle etc).

Are many folks out there DJ'n MP3s (or other digital format) in this scene ?

What's your thoughts about this. Surely there's a convenience factor for having a digital record box (and lots of flexibility when using DJ software). Also, it means you can DL new material and play it in your set that night.

You can emulate the tactile nature of vinyl with Serato / Final Scratch so I am curious why vinyl is still the preferred choice (if indeed, that is the case).

I have some material to release soon so I am naturally curious the best way to push it..

PS - For the record, I have a reasonably large collection of vinyl but I move around a bit so digital is becoming increasingly more convenient !

I wish I could do everything on vinyl, I don't care if its heavy or if they warp or bend or scratch. For me its just the classic feel of having a track that you can hold in your hands and spin at will, and no matter what years down the line that tune will still be there on that same record.

Despite this I feel I have to mix with digital tunes as well because you can never get all the tunes you want on vinyl, cuz not everything comes out on it especially unreleased stuff obviously, and if/when it does come out on vinyl it can be hard to find.

Yea, I checked out the stickies before the post. The stuff at the bottom isn't so prominent though ?

Still, I think you are missing the point of the post. It's not a vinyl vs mp3 thing or a filesharing sucks rant (for the record, there are plenty of decent and legit mp3s available via netlabels).

I've played a couple of sets at Suare Roots and Wrong Music in Brighton, I use a Macbook running Live 6 with a trigger finger


This is pretty much the same setup that Milanese uses. (Before I got all the kit I asked what he used to performn live)

The great thing about this setup is that you can use the faders to send a bit of your audio to a reverb or a delay, use some of the knobs for hi & lo pass filter, or weirder effects if need be.

The trigger pads are great, as you can put the same track on 2 pads, have the start position of one on the kick and the other start position on the snare, that way you can tap out rhythms and then when you let go the whole track carries on playing.

Digital DJing is definitely more flexible, and can ne just as fun with the right hardware.

i think you have to make use of at least some sort of digital element in your sets these days, otherwise you are just imposing arbitraty, irrational limits on your own creativity.

i get mp3s in my inbox, promo CDRs in my mail... and if i like these tunes i'll want to play them out.

personally, i do prefer to mix with vinyl so my sets are mostly vinyl based. but i also have a laptop running Traktor so that i can mix wavs or mp3s together with the vinyl, and i find that works.

effectively i use the laptop as a pair of CD decks, with me mixing records and files together in the dj mixer instead of in software on the laptop. so i guess i'm a hybrid analogue/digital dj.
