what's the genre? if there is one, it's only as much as the 'burial sound' is a genre, IMO...
i dunno man, i used to be well into this sound but it's too detached from the club for me these days. and BoC are just so far out with their own little aesthetic...
i used to try and make this kind of stuff a long time ago, i think most of hte character in the BoC recordings comes from the analogue equipment. i know they were really influenced by My Bloody Valentine and the 'wonky' character of their stuff, so they used to record onto shit analogue tape and physically degrade the tape, then re-record it, etc. and a LOT of field recordings, static, etc. that and a lot of hallucinogenic drugs. it's a very analogue sound, very hard to get if you're rocking software.
it's pretty easy to replicate the synth sounds, use a slow LFO to detune one oscillator slightly, heavy portamento, etc etc, but hard to get to the character of the sound. which is why this Tycho stuff, and all the other BoC influenced artists, sounds really bland to me.
Yeah, not a genre at all. Just a technique. All about creating 'nostalgic' sounds for people born from the early to late '80s.
From what I can tell, it's all about the degradation of audio.
Also done in the pad sound in this.
Sounds like recordings on old VHS tapes, no?
Edit: Making a pad sound (incl. effects and whatnot). Resample, slightly bitcrush and modulate the pitch in the sampler?

well i'd call it a genre ambient downtempo stuff like tycho arovane jon hopkins etc
they often share similar sounding leads and pads
i find this stuff more interesting that resample and distort 50x times shit as it takes some effort (prolly just as much) to get that degradation sounding perfect and sonically pleasing

Yeah it's a great sound that I was thinking of incorporating into my stuff as well. Just never really thought about how to do it until this thread. I suppose the technique I posted could lead to some decent results if I tried. Simply routing an LFO to the oscillator and putting another LFO to that LFO, modulating its amplitude got me something kinda similar.
Tape saturation plug-ins would help too, I suppose.

yea i mean i listed a few plugins in my article, but this is one of those sounds that you have to work the tune around which a lot of people who just figure out a formula and make generic copies can't do
a lot of it seems to be filtering harmonically rich sounds and reverb too
kind of like using a reese lowpassed vs a sine wave for a bass

wow and flutter .... thats pretty much it. there is a fantastic reaktor plug if you don't have old vhs or any other tapes to work with.

hardly a small aspect. i am assuming you are talking about their pads and leads?
This is 50% if not more of the battle when re-creating a BOC / Tycho style lead or pad. Apart from flutter there is a lot of unintentional OSC drift. Perhaps the other important aspect is the type of scales and chord progression that BOC are known for.
But in reality, to say that Tapes were a small aspect of the BOC sound is to ignore their whole artistic process which is not only self-evident but also how they have admitted they create their signature sound.

i'm not just on about BoC just one of the many examples i could use, though the simple tape multitracks BoC admitted to using are def a big part if their sound
