So, I've got this name that has been the mainstay of my DJing/production for the last 10yrs (since I started really). But as I'm doing more & more production, and different genres, do I need to have a different production names for different projects? For example, I've got a few decent tech house tunes that I've knocked out recently that I'm happy with, and have played out at parties, but I don't want to give them my Wub tag as they're not entirely reflective of the sort of material I'd usually play in a DJ set.

Just how important is/isn't it to people that I differentiate between the styles of music that I'm into? I get booked to play tech house every now and again at smaller parties, but at the same time I don't want to have a certain genre associated to a certain name if it means I'd be missing out on other types of music that I enjoy.

I'd say it depends entirely on how you want to project yourself. Personally, I quite like the idea of multiple aliases. I mean, you build up an identity with one name and if you branch of, it seems logical to start afresh in a way.

Yeah, that was my thinking. But on the flip, it means a whole new 'name' that needs to be built up from scratch, relatively speaking of course. Though any new direction (and subsequent name) that anyone takes later on in their 'career' (and I use the term very very loosely here) will benefit from having the build up of production knowledge behind it, so the level of tunes should be higher from the get go.

Mmm, exactly. Plus, it might sound contrived, but certain names seem to need to reflect upon a genre sometimes.

Just don't pick a name someone recommends on here

Yeah, as I thought. Like a scary number of 'electro' acts use drug affiliated names, bizarrely.

You don't have to use another alias. Just look at Calvertron and AC Slater, they use the same production name for the different genres of music they produce.

Alex's productions still carry a similar motif throughout them though, and could in theory be interchangeably found within the same DJ set. If I'm knocking out 126bpm tech house, for example, as well as dubstep, these aren't genres that are known for co-existing.

Hmm I guess I'd approach it in a different way.

I.e, releasing everything under the same name.
I just like the idea of building up one name for yourself and sticking by it.

That said, multiple alias's would be pretty cool.

for me i have similar names for the different kind of tunes i make. for my mainstay dubstep tunes regardless of wether they're jump up, chillout, filth etc they will be under primsound.

for all of my ambient, down tempo stuff it'll be under primscape.

simple as. i think it's a good idea personally, stops any feeling that you have to stay within a certain genre.

I'd go for multi aliases. I like hr idea of it. Shows your versatility, and like someone says you build up an identity for that alias, and you end up with a different identity for each.

Nice Prim, I look how you choose to use similar names. That sort of links it up and you can imagine people will look up one, and find both.
